Another boring question - how much do you spend on your weekly supermarket shop

handlemecarefully · 16/02/2004 10:06

I only ask because dh reckons I am profligate. There are 3 of us currently (including 19 month old dd) and I currently spend £90 ish / £100 ish per week. It does seem a lot.....

If you guys do better than me it might inspire me to analyse a little further to see what economies I can make

White Rice (you ready, nutcracker!?): bring 2 cups of water to a boil, turn down to a simmer (just little bubbles on the surface) and add one cup of white rice. Cook for 6 minutes precisely. Taste and should be done; makes almost 3 cups worth.
Spuds are even cheaper than rice, though.

lou33 · 16/02/2004 14:16

We try and limit our weekly shop to under £100 per week, for 6 of us, that includes everything.

Nutty, have you tried cooking rice this way? Fry the rice quickly in olive oil, until it is opaque (stirring constantly). Add boiling water and then leave it until the water cooks away, stirring occasionally. Keep a lid on the pot, and it should take about 10 mins or so. The rice comes out fluffy and yummy. Add a stock cube and/or some tomato puree to the water if you want a slight taste or colour to it.

marialuisa · 16/02/2004 15:23

Zebra, don't you get bored with that sort of diet? I admit that rice is our staple but we tend to "do" a bit more to it. DH was very proud when he came home with a 20kg bag of Tilda basmati from Sainsbury's though. think he was just pleased that his ageing, unfit self could acrry it

carla · 16/02/2004 17:22

Haven't had time to read all this, but ours comes out at around £2,000 or so per month, but having said that, I shop mainly at Sainsbury's so that includes wine, etc, and all the stuff you could get from a chemist but don't. There are four of us as well.

£2000 a month?!?!
Wow, there are four of us and with a weekly takeaway maximum is around £80 a week. I coulnt spend that much if i tried. What do you buy?

hercules · 16/02/2004 17:25

btw we use a rice cooker and get perfect rice everytime. best thing we ever bought.

As I got in from errands and a little shop today, I checked Mumsnet and found this thread which I clicked to read after unpacking and sorting dd. I find it very interesting esp. as I just spent £30 at the local butcher. The butcher thought I was stocking up, not really it may last 2 weeks.

For £30 I got:
4 pork/leek sausages
4 pork chops
2 pork steaks
two 2 lb portions of lean mince ( chili, burgers, fajitas)
belly pork to serve 4
ox liver to serve 4
1 lean rump roast

Not a lot really, but a variety esp. since DH is tired of chicken. We could get a little or a lot from the butcher. Oh, and a ham shank he is smoking for me

I generally spend about £60 a week on groceries, which includes fresh fruit mainly and a few fresh veg., plus bread, yoghurt and milk and DH's coffee.

DD's nappies are £10 every 3 weeks. Every month we stock toilet paper, soap, smoked bacon, whole-grain cereal, fruit juices, etc.

Every 3 months we get detergent and washing up liquid, baked beans, pasta, rice, spices etc.

We try not to spend more than £80 per week which is very good.

Another way to do rice is in the oven when you are roasting something else, no stirring and perfect rice every time too.

£1 per portion of meat =
£2 per meal x 2 persons = £4 per day / therefore £28 per week for meat, fish alone

bossykate · 16/02/2004 17:37

wow, carla, that is £462 per week! are there a lot of you?

hercules · 16/02/2004 17:39

I'm dying to know Carla

JennH · 16/02/2004 19:11

Well not including our 10% employees discount at ASDA we spend about £50-70 a week on food. That includes brand name Forumla, and nappies (sometimes brand names sometimes not). I tend to buy very general cleaners which i can use everywhere, and unless its for the baby i buy ASDA's own stuff. A £70 shop often includes a DVD/CD or an item of clothing.

fisil · 16/02/2004 19:15

I now spend £75 a week, plus maybe £10 in extras. Ocado does free delivery if you spend more than £75, so I have made it into a game each week trying to spend as close to £75 as possible - and amazingly have saved money this way!

Clayhead · 16/02/2004 19:37

About £50 per week, 2 adults, dd 2 years old, ds 24 weeks old. Mostly from local shops, occasional supermarket shopping. Have noticed how much I save since being SAHM and using local shops (more time consuming but better value).

zebra · 16/02/2004 19:43

£2000 per month?! That's almost twice what our monthly income was for most of last year (including the tax credits!.)
You can do a lot with spices and olive oil/butter/mayo to make basic cheap filling food tasty, M'Luisa.

Demented · 16/02/2004 20:14

We try to stick to £80 a week (including all the midweek trips out for milk etc) and some weeks manage better than others, in addition to that we probably have one takeaway a week. There are four of us at home all day as DH works from home so very little eating outside the house, two adults, one five year old and a 20 month old (in cloth nappies), oh and the cat.

£2,000 a month!!! Surely that's a typo????

florenceuk · 16/02/2004 20:26

We spend in total £140 pw, for 3 of us including nappies etc. We don't really stint on anything - I buy lots of fruit, organic meat, brand name goods, and ready meals - so this is probably at the high end. I figure that as I've gone from eating out once a week to once every six months, I'm probably still ahead compared to pre-baby days!

stupidgirl · 16/02/2004 20:33

I am single mum with 2 littlies. We're all veggie. I spend on average about £40 a week, although sometimes it's as low as £25. That includes everything - cleaning stuff (what little there is!),toiletries, cat food (for 2 cats)etc.

Lisa78 · 16/02/2004 20:34

Was going to say too bloody much - but not as much as you handlemecarefully! Sorry!

Lisa78 · 16/02/2004 20:37

£628.10p since January 1st according to MS money!

lydialemon · 16/02/2004 21:20

I know ours is quite low, but I think a lot of thats because (as I'm not allowed to say it on the other thread!) we don't eat ready meals, or really much convieniance (sp?) foods. I do buy complicated sauces like sweet and sour, fajita, but thats about it. In my freezer I've got meat (mainly chicken), vegetables and icecream, plus a packet of sausages and an emergency packet of chicken dippers (on special offer at Tescos )

I think its just the way I was bought up, my Dad was a bit of a food snob and although I'm not I cook the way I'm used to IYKWIM.

DH was bought up eating greek food. When we first started going out he would eat baked beans at my house as he thought they were exotic ( or was that erotic?)

Linnet · 16/02/2004 22:06

There are 3 of us, Dh, dd and myself. Our weekly food budget is usually £40. We do our shopping at the weekend so sometimes it's a budget of £50 if there are only 4 weekends in a month rather than 5 but usually it's £40. We take advantage of the offers in the supermarket and the leaflet we get from Safeways which we take with us to get the price match. I always write a list and decide what meals we will be eating during the week.

lou33 · 16/02/2004 22:53

I've just spent £96 online at Tesco, which includes a delivery charge, but not including any discounts from special offers. That's for 6 of us. Am now dreaming about what I could get for £2000 a month!

Slinky · 16/02/2004 23:00

Just read through this thread again, - £2,000 per month! Surely that must be a typing error!!!

I thought I was sometimes frivilous with food shopping but there is NO WAY I could get through spending that much!!

nutcracker · 16/02/2004 23:04

2000 a month, that can't be right, can it ?? Wow

hercules · 16/02/2004 23:06

It can't be a mistake, look at the carefully placed comma.
