comic for boy age 4 but more like 5. He has just started reading on his own and i remember the little comics like Twinkle for ourselves but dont know about boys. I was thinking of comics with suitable Super Heroes as opposed to the Cbeebies magazine and Toy magazine format. Any suggestions please?

Beano.
Dandy.

Marina · 22/06/2006 14:31

Agree. The Beano has stayed true to its heritage, the Dandy has had a wacky modernist makeover but ds adores both, has done so since he was 5. Esp the Beano - he is a member of their Club, which is fun for them to join.
I really don't think there is anything else out there, but they are still good choices.
Oh, and if he likes Wallace and Gromit, you can get a fortnightly magazine about their adventures, which is produced to a high standard and ds loves that too.

Footy not fire-starting or teeny-speed-dating.
Ds has the annual but it doesn't seem to be sold in any of our usual newsagent ports of call.

marymay · 22/06/2006 14:35

action man (might be a bit young)my ds is 7 and has been reading it for a couple of years

Marina · 22/06/2006 14:35

tenalady, you might be a bit astonished at what the new artists have done to poor Brassneck and Winker Watson but the Dandy basics are still there

controlfreaky · 22/06/2006 14:37

agree re beano / dandy / match. also horrible science for something more educashonal

GDG · 22/06/2006 14:41

Ooh, do all your 5 yr olds get magazines?? Hmm, ds1 would love to, especially if it came in the post!

GDG · 22/06/2006 14:41

Can you order them online?

tenalady · 22/06/2006 14:46

yes, yes GDh ds loves the pony mag, course he cant read it himself but he does love horses so I get him it.

Thank BINK for this fabulous LINK

GDG · 22/06/2006 14:54

Oh thanks for that link - what a fab idea!

sugarfree · 22/06/2006 14:55

Ds1 is still reading Match at 12,but only because I refuse to buy Zoo or Nuts.
(he did say at the time "Well,it was worth a try mum!")

Ds2(6)has Funny Bones where you end up with a skeleton by the time they leave home.It would have been cheaper and quicker to rob a grave, frankly.

Ds3(nearly 3) has the one with the most annoying piece of plastic tat taped to the front that he can find.

tenalady · 22/06/2006 14:59

thank Bink for nothing, having a quick peek as the page came on my screen my cursor was set upon some girly magazine coming out at me. aarrrgh, having a hot flush and need a cup of tea.

sugarfree lol ds2 and robbing graves being cheaper

GDG, it has been the only way for ds to get his hands on that Dr Who Adventures magazine from the BBC (sells out at dawn locally).
Should point out that we encourage gift subs for birthdays and Xmas - popular with grandparents who tsk about plastic mountains etc.

Marina · 22/06/2006 15:00

Steer yourself back to the childrens' mags page and your flush should subside tenalady

frogs · 22/06/2006 15:38

He's a bit young for Aquila , but keep it in mind for a few years time. Ds (nearly 7) will spend a happy half hour reading dd1's copy of Aquila. It's subscription only, so it does come in the post.

Bink · 22/06/2006 15:58

gosh that was subversive of me wasn't it tenalady

actually, creepier than that, it's my mother in law's link

FROGS did I tell you ds has had a letter published in Aquila? It says "I think AQUILA is the best thing in the world. I also think it could have an extra Maths puzzle page at the back."

frogs · 22/06/2006 16:02

Which edition was it in, Bink? I'll get ds to look out for it, he'll be most impressed. Dd1 has had a letter published too, and won a competition once! I love the way it's so interactive, and I think the (presumably) small circulation means they have a real chance of getting their contributions in.

Bink · 22/06/2006 16:08

Either the current one, or the one just before. The environment one, I think - I'm at work so can't check. It's top right of the first letters page.

Have been overhearing a lot of piety being dished out to dd by ds about greenhouse gases and melting icecaps, so I think that issue made a big impression all round.

Bink · 22/06/2006 16:11

Oh, the other thing - incidentally - which made a big impression recently was a letter from an older girl describing her family's year off travelling. They've been asking for a gap year ever since, & dh's world trip (still ongoing) has been christened "Daddy's Gap Month".

There's always something inspiring. It is fantastic.

Hallgerda · 22/06/2006 17:47

sugarfree, PMSL about Funny Bones. When DS1 was very young I saw a similar magazine with a plastic body part in each issue - the one I happened upon had "Free Brain" on the cover. I thought I could probably do with it at the time!

sugarfree · 22/06/2006 17:51

I wouldn't mind so much but the whole bloody thing is in a jumble on his bedroom floor waiting for 'someone' to put it back together.
It was halfway done once but it fell apart when someone breathed a bit heavy down the road.
