Maclaren Techno Stroller - anyone got one or suggest a good stroller?

Janus · 05/02/2002 15:05

My old maclaren is on its last legs - the hood has completely collapsed meaning I can't keep the raincover on, etc.
I'm trying to decide on a new stroller and quite like the look of the Techno Stroller but it's quite expensive and wonder if it's worth it or if the hood is prone to collapsing on that one too? If you do have one is it quite light?, does it collapse quite easily? is there anything about it you hate?
I need one to get on the tube, bus, in the boot, etc so would like one that's quite easy to get up and down - anyone got any good suggestions?

Janus, I've got a mclaren daytripper which I love and is incredibly light and easy to chuck in the boot/on the bus. The only downsides are that the shopping basket is very small and now you come to mention it, the hood is quite flimsy, although I've used it for about a year and its not showing any signs of breaking (famous last words!).

Lizzer · 05/02/2002 16:45

Get yourself to Tesco quick and grab a techno for £99 (you get the raincover too). They have them on offer at the moment, my friend's just got one after trying and loving mine. (Someone on here told me about the deal, but can't remember who - sorry, but thanks for your advice!)
Honestly they are the best stroller ever, well worth the money (even though I paid £150 over a yr ago) The hood's brill, the only downside is the brakes are a bit hard to kick on, but I never really use mine anyway. Sorry, not trying to hard sell you Janus, but I love 'em!

Lizzer · 05/02/2002 16:50

PS -yes, its lighter than the usual maclarens and folds just as small as daytripper. Did I mention the adjustable seat length, fully removable seat, sporty wheels and soft grip handles, reflector stripes on the hood for night visabilty.....I could go on!!!

Actually, if you win the lottery Mothercare are selling a Titanium framed Techno, with leather seat designed by Bill Amberg for the princely sum of....wait for it...£1000!!! Check it out online www.mothercare.co.uk - amazing!

I'll just go and get a life now (Lizzer slumps off, embarrased...)

dm2 · 05/02/2002 17:36

Janus - I've only had mine a few weeks (tesco bargain) but so far it's been brill. Only drawback is the brakes. There's more info on the mumsnet reveiw of single pushchairs from birth.

jodee · 05/02/2002 17:45

Lizzer, you do make me laugh! Men get all excited by motors, for us it's designer buggies!

I've got the predecessor to the Techno (Free Spirit) and it's great, the only downside is the brakes as has been mentioned - you would have thought they would have sorted them out on the Techno.

Janus · 05/02/2002 19:38

Bloody hell, glad I asked here as didn't realise the deal with Tescos - do you think they do it online as don't have a local one. Am sold now, for £99 that's brill. Already have a knackered Maclarens and the brakes are crap but I'm used to bending down on doing it with my fingers on the tube now - how attractive???!
Funnily enough, I did a search on Mothercare earlier and honestly thought they had a misprint
when saw the pram for £1,000, had a quick look, well it is a limited edition, nice leather trim but who buys these things??!
Off to search Tesco online!

Janus - have you tried Kiddicare.com? They've got Techno's at £110.

dm2 · 06/02/2002 16:00

sorry about the aberrant apostrophe!
The £110 Technos have a jazzy blue seat, more dignified grey ones are £125.

I brought a Techno a couple of weeks ago, I think it's great. I also invested in the cosy toes which is lovely and cosy for those windy and wet days !! You can use it as a cosy toes or zip off the top to have a fleecy underneath bit ! They also do travel bags for them for when they get thrown in the hold of a plane, these are about £15.

I saw them on babymart.com too I think they were £125.00. Maclaren are bringing out another version in March apparently which has different colour ranges and plastic handles instead of foam ones

cerys · 07/02/2002 09:07

I've got a Mothercare storecard (always pay it off in full, so don't get stung by the interest BTW ). Today they sent details of a special weekend they're having on 16/17 February, with various offers and bargains. They will be selling the blue Techno for £79 (half price) and there was a further coupon for 10% off. This is apparently for that weekend only.

Worth considering, if you really want a bargain? I've also fancied the techno for ages, but we have a small pushchair collection and another baby on the way, so really need a double, but I am very tempted!

Hi
I live in America my parents sent my Maclarens buggy 3 years ago. It now has a broken hood. Its tartan blue and yellows. Store says I need name and info but thats all I can tell them apart from its a folding buggy. Anyone know where I can get a new hood

LIZS · 05/08/2003 18:18

You could try contacting Maclaren direct - they sent me some replacement springs for the clip that holds it closed (broke again though). Could it have been a Mistral or its predecessor (no. of seat positions and approx. date bought might help identify it. Do you still have family in UK who could forward it if necessary ? You can get plain navy blue hoods with raincovers at places in UK like Toys r Us, also Tesco Direct used to do them so I think they must be a pretty universal fit.

I've got the 2002 version which I got off the kiddicare website for £99, a couple of months ago for my 1 yr old DD. It's fab.

We've tried pretty much every option -
a Pliko (hated, very flimsy),
a m'care stroller (nice but DH didn't like pattern so is now at Grans),
an M&P Aria (ok but not great for long days), and 2 'big and bouncy' prams, all for the same baby. The hood is great, is really big and has handy pockets. I think the buggy is easy to collapse too. I like them but agree that £150 is a bit steep for a stroller.

wickedstepmother · 05/08/2003 20:03

Just checked out kiddicare and spotted that they are doing the 2002 version (same as mine, without the shiny plastic/silver wheels of the 2003 version) at £99.99 in a nice plain colour. The only thing with the 2002 is that the back doesn't recline as far as the 2003, but is fine for a 3 months+ baby to sleep in quite comfortably.

wickedstepmother · 05/08/2003 20:04

Oops, my mistake, it is this years version (the wheels aren't quite as in your face as the ones on the blu and red versions!)

just wondering if you've seen the Mistral hood message on Products which gives Maclaren's no.

Jenie · 13/08/2003 16:12

Ds has a stroller from toys r us it's a toledo and I love it, it cost about £60 and that was 1/2 price (bargain) it reclines far enough for a 3mnth baby and is a joy to push around although as it's in black I'm just waiting for the colours to fade. I've since been informed that had I waited a few months that the colour would have been different!

But then that would have been a different model.

It came with basket, rain cover and cosy toes and a hood inclusive to the price.

This buggy is as I understand it made by Mclaren, incase the makers name mattered.

mistral on 3rd boy!
