So, just theoretically, if some friends were coming to your house tomorrow and the house was a pit, what would you make sure to clean? In this theoretical exercise, they are staying for a week and they have 2 kids.

I've already got the sheets clean, what next?

Thanks!

Loos and bath

(and spray furnish polish around, like under tables and stuff and they'll think you've been well busy)

Don't forget to leave the hoover out.

Janh · 09/02/2004 15:39

And get a new cloth/sponge in the kitchen.

Janh · 09/02/2004 15:40

(I bet nobody wants to come to my house now! )

handlemecarefully · 09/02/2004 15:41

I echo what lazyeye says but in addition to loos and bath, a clean kitchen is probably quite important.

LIZS · 09/02/2004 15:46

Not sure I should give my tips away ! Agree with loos/bath. Also kitchen surfaces (in my case already mostly covered in clutter) and hob. Also spray polish any shiny surfaces, like mirrors and table tops, amd remove sticky fingerprints from doors and windows.

lazyeye · 09/02/2004 15:49

No JJ - I want to come to your house 'cos you sound like me. I only really do a good clean when visitors or due or towards the end of a pgncy when I get a lemon jif fettish. Otherwise, you could stir my house with a spoon.

Thomcat · 09/02/2004 15:49

Yeah as long as the loo/bathroom and the kitchen is clean that's fine.

Maybe a dash round with some polish and the hoover.

Bit of a tidy up always helps as well.

lydialemon · 09/02/2004 15:54

If they've got kids, your house will be trashed in 5 minutes anyway.

Your kids + guestkids = 10xnormal mess IME

CountessDracula · 09/02/2004 15:56

Get a big cardboard box and chuck all your clutter in it. When they have gone look through it and decided if you really need it!

easy · 09/02/2004 16:01

Countess,

do you ever get chance to look thru the box?

CountessDracula · 09/02/2004 16:03

I have numerous boxes. I only look in them if I have lost something!

Every so often I chuck them all out

Janh · 09/02/2004 16:24

I do boxes. I have dozens

Clothes! Put away all the washing. The biggest thing that makes my house a mess is the constant presence of piles of dirty/clean/to-be-ironed/put away/etc clothes and things. When I get it done (not since about the beginning of last November!!) then it looks tidy!

Carla · 09/02/2004 16:48

Skirting boards, or at least the bits that get seen. But then we've got dogs, so maybe you don't have that problem. Susanmt, have you ever got round to one of those piles of washed clothes that never get put away, only to find they no longer fit?

I have boxes, but they're full because I've done that once too often. Thanks for all the tips! Ks, that would mean I'd have to iron. After washing, of course...

My husband just said that it's the warmth of the house that matters most. So I'll turn up the heater. He's a sweetie.
