Swallows nest in the eaves

Swallows have built a nest in our eaves. I don't mind (quite like it, really) but we are due to have loads of roofline and guttering replacement work done soon, which will destroy the nest. How long do they need the nest before they abandon it? I know they return and build on the remains of the previous year's nest, so if it's all cleared away when the roof work is done, will they return next year?

PrettyCandles, I've had a look at the \link{http://www.rspb.org.uk/birds/guide/s/swallow/index.asp\RSPB website}. I'm afraid they're a protected species under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 so you'd better delay your roof work until they've gone. They can raise several broods, and the last brood may be in the nest as late as September in a good year. I understand it is possible to build artificial roof nest holes if you want to encourage them to return.

Thanks Hallgerda, why didn't I think of looking there? Well, Mumsnet is the fount of all knowledge, after all!

I had every intention of delaying until the nest was empty, even though I didn't know that they are protected, but September - oh dear.
