looking to rent a new house in an area i know well (lived there for 10 years ) due to seperation with hubby need new place and want to stay near to the childrens school and keep them close to dad (split all very nice and poilte and still good friends).
Any way the house is great ticked all the boxes and i was ready to sign there and then....BUT....
the letting agent said that the people who live there (been there 4 months) are moving out on police advice as the lady had been attacked on the door step of the house, he had no other details but seemed to think it might be drugs as the partner is black (hows that for a sweeping assumption Angry).
But i love the house and thee is nothing else in the area at the moment, but with 2 small kids i am worried that there might be problems there, i called the local police but they could not tell me anything.
We need to let the agents know and i did like the house but i dont want to put my kids in any danger
Please advise

Agent going to put up for let sign and then a let by sign that will stay there for a long time, also putting a break clause in lease.
Knocked on a few doors of neighbours and walked up and down street a bit (turning in to a stalker Wink) will ask about changing locks and also sort out alarm and fire alarms. Hoping it wqill all be ok, children excited about moving back near daddy and school so thats good.

ex-h and dp. Hope you'll be very happy there. Is it worth calling the police back and saying, I understand you can't give out personal details, but is there any reason why the next tenant would be at risk? Ask the officer, would you live in this house?

OK WE HAVE MOVED IN TO THE HOUSE AND STARTED TO SETTLE IN ....THEN MET THE NEIGHBOURS WHO ARE LOVELY, AND THEY TOLD US ALL ABOUT WHAT WENT ON THERE EVEN GAVE US THE PAPERS! THE WOMAN WAS HELD AT GUNPOINT AND HER HOUSE RANSACKED, AND HER CHILDREN THREATENED!!!!!!!!!! FOR GODS SAKE I COULD NOT BELEAVE IT, I MEAN THIS IS NOT A INNER CITY SLUM THIS IS A VERY WELL TO DO AREA. THINK THE LETTING AGENT KNEW MORE THEN HE WAS LETTING ON TO BE HONEST AND WAS RIGHT IN HIS ASSUMPTION, SO NOW WHAT THE HELL DO I DO?

Kimi, dont stress, the chances of it happening again are next to nil, and generally if you have trouble on your doorstep its because you have brought it there yourself. Stop worrying, honestly, the neighbours are lovely and wilbe on high alert for any nonsense

Kimi - there's no reason at all to suspect that it is the HOUSE that was responsible for this! It will have been an 'in-fighting' incident - a very horrible one - but the police will have been on top of it, and everyone will be aware that you are not the previous tennent.

Relax and enjoy your new house.

Thank you charliecat, im just so worried about my children being there, i think the other people were ivolved with some very bad people, not the sort you want to turn up on your doorstep and not the sort to look to see if they have the right people in the house or not, just the thought of someone being held at gun point in what is now ment to be my home is really scary.

Whoever did it, and it was awful, will know that the people have moved on. They are probably hassling them at thier new address.
All the places ive lived have previously had right shits in them, drug dealers etc and ive worried, but the sort of folk they are, they take thier trouble with them. Honestly.
They are too stupid to keep quiet about the fact they are moving.

They were probably advised to move because personal info etc may have been stolen and could be used against them eg identity theft, not that they were at risk of it happening again.
I think you've got to just believe that lightning doesn't strike twice and get the landlords to pay for any extra security you need to feel better.
