First birthday present for baby lentil weaver-your thoughts, please

Ideas, please.

She is a second child so we have no end of Hungry Caterpillars and variants, plastic crap and so forth. She's not especially girly atm, seen as how she's a baby and all.

We have every book a child could wish for.

I want something she can keep as she grows up. She'll also be getting a trike from us.

It also needs to be something small and light really, because we are forever decluttering.

Don't mind doing a bit of sewing/knitting, but I need ideas!

She is named after a goddess and is a Cancer, if that helps.

(oh and I would imagine that her uncle is buying her some sort of lifetime supply of junk food crap, and someone will probably find it immesely amusing to buy a Barbie doll, so we've got that covered, thanks)

Photoalbum/montage/scrapbook? Together with a letter from you telling her about her first year?

Keep meaning to do one for mine . . . .

Fillyjonk · 05/06/2006 21:06

thats a good idea.

hmm though am not sure how many photos of her there are.

she looks quite like ds though Shock. No, that would be wrong.

Knitted crab?

gothicmama · 05/06/2006 21:07

birthstine necklace

Greensleeves · 05/06/2006 21:07

flower press?

gothicmama · 05/06/2006 21:07

birthstone!

FrannyandZooey · 05/06/2006 21:10

A super duper luxury fantastico treasure basket?

We got ds a set of real percussion instruments when he was 18 months. With supervision he could play with all of them, I'd imagine a 1 year old could have a good chew and a good shake of most of them. He loves them now, it's one of the best things we ever bought and hilarious to play with when we have a party. Slightly drunk adults plus rowdy children and a load of tambourines - marvellous :)

Notquitesotiredmum · 05/06/2006 21:11

lol at using pictures of ds!

You could also include photos of her fave teddy/ house/garden/hospital where she was born/ grannies/pets/ds1 etc etc

Stick in a first sock too. They are sooooo sweet

Fillyjonk · 05/06/2006 21:14

I have not got any of her first socks.

Shock Shock Shock

I am a seriously bad mummy, I really am.

She's bascially spent the whole first year being carried around in a sling behind ds. Shock. Bloody hell.

Franny, whats a treasure basket? She loves music-we play music a lot. We have every sodding percussion instrument known to humanity though. Including part of a gamelan.

Birthstones etc are very nice, she got about 10 when she was born though.

Usually recommended for babies who are sitting but not yet walking, but toddlers love them too. If you made a really special one she could keep it for her own children :)

Fillyjonk · 05/06/2006 21:31

thats actually a good idea, franny. It might encourage me to make time just with her too, for I am crap at this Sad. Suppose I could do a special themed one.

could put some of \link{http://www.knitty.com/issuespring06/PATTnautie.html\these} in it too...

Bloody hell who makes those, Filly? Do you make them? I have to have some.

mrsnoah · 05/06/2006 21:38

fillyjonk; have 2 girls myself and they NEVER played with any of the more expensive toys we bought them .Best gift ever was a real little goldfish (in tank of course)! Loved it.

FrannyandZooey · 05/06/2006 21:40

Fillyjonk, if you are really interested I can lob my word document on heuristic play in your direction

Beauregard · 05/06/2006 21:41

A nice Book?
Bracelet?
Snowglobe of some description?

Fillyjonk · 05/06/2006 22:10

frany-I can make them.

They're easy. Not sure how long they'd take, haven't looked at the pattern in depth, but not hugely ages.

your document sound like the kind of thing a good snibbet needs. How can I get it?

I do NOT do goldfish. When I was a smaller Fillyjonk, I went to Woodcraft Folk camp, as you do. I came back to find my goldfish had got a lot smaller and changed colour somewhat.

A few days later, our drains overflowed...

I was thinking what sort of pressie to get dd who will be 2 on sunday - yes I know I have left it late but h leaving me has rather confused and frazzled my brain

I was thinking about making her a really special treasure basket (which she would love) - no idea where to get a really nice basket from though

moondog · 05/06/2006 22:25

Why not make her a patchwork quilt?
Very easy and a treasure that grows in value.
I have made one for all the people I love.
Smile

Mercy · 05/06/2006 22:27

Fantastic idea Moondog!

moondog · 05/06/2006 22:29

Mine have bits of clothes and fabrics in that have been loved and worn a lot over the years,so there is a story in every one.

I reckon these have gold star lentil weaver status. Grin

Fillyjonk · 05/06/2006 22:30

good idea, md.

but can i go from 0-quilt in a month, do you think?

I can sew, but slowly.

OP posts:
Fillyjonk · 05/06/2006 22:31

and none of my fabric ha a story, we chuck old clothes round here Shock (or pass them on). Hence no baby socks.

OP posts:
moondog · 05/06/2006 22:33

Well I could!
Does it have to be presented on first birthday???
I once did one for a Christening and was still sewing it (friend was driving) as we pulled up to the church!
If you have sewn before, you could easily do one that was perhaps a metre square, esp. if you are doing a very simple design.

mrsnoah · 05/06/2006 22:34

oh FJ, so sorry to bring back bad memory of goldfish :( Always wanted to be in the Woodcraft folks but got stuck with bloomin boring Brownies counting bits of string and repeatedly failing Hostess badge. What did you do on camps ?
