Hi

On and off for a while now I keep thinking I can smell gas = Im suspecting the boiler

Ive noticed it more recently and want to get it checked - i keep getting headaches which i have just thought might be linked

do i ring a boiler engineer or am i likely to have to wait ages to get an appointment?

Becca, if it's an actual smell of gas look up Gas in the phone book - there will be an emergency number for Transco or somebody.

marthamoo · 06/02/2004 17:00

Transco - ring them straight away and they will send someone immediately. I've rung them a couple of times (and one time he fixed the leak - in our cellar - for free even though he wasn't supposed to!) The number's in the Yellow Pages.

lydialemon · 06/02/2004 17:01

Transco is 0800 111 999

Momof2 · 06/02/2004 17:02

If you call Transco they will come out and if they detect a leak they will cut you off(think they cal it "make it safe" which is the safest option, but I don't think they will fix it. You need to call a plumber on an emergancy call out and get them there asap as well to find out what is causing the smell.
This is going to be costly though - shame you are far away as DP is a plumber.

I have NO MONEY

Obviously cant put a price on safety but what a bummer - Im literally skint - could have put it on credit card but i ripped it up the other day!!! Will have to go overdrawn, how much do you think its going to be??

Do I still need to ring as matter or urgency if the smell is just every now and then?

I would at least get Transco out Becca - to be sure it isn't anything too serious.

marthamoo · 06/02/2004 17:09

Me too. Don't say you've smelled it on and off for a while - say you've only just noticed it.

Beccarollover · 06/02/2004 17:11

So do you think transco as first port of call?

When i say im skint I dont mean Ill not do anything about it just moaning about the timing!

Its definitely best to check ill ring them

Do you have to tidy up for transco coming (please say no!)

OP posts:
marthamoo · 06/02/2004 17:12

Oh becca Yes, you have a massive gas link and your house is in danger of blowing up but you should make time to tidy up before you call them. What are you like? Get on the phone!!!

marthamoo · 06/02/2004 17:12

I mean leak

GeorginaA · 06/02/2004 17:12

Yes, definitely Transco first - that way if it is a false alarm then you don't have to fork out anything! (and you never know, you might get a nice one who does a simple fix for free like marthamoo!)

Blu · 06/02/2004 17:13

Becca, sorry to hear this. TRANSCO will make it safe, and there is no charge for calling them out. BUT they tend to seal it all off and say you can't use it til a Corgi boiler person has looked at it.

See my recent thread "IMPORTANT: Have you had your boiler serviced recently?"

My advice would be to get it dealt with. Esp if you have headaches.

Beccarollover · 06/02/2004 17:15

Will transco seal it off by default even if its false alarm or can they confirm its ok?

Will transco man get angry if its nothing?

OP posts:
Beccarollover · 06/02/2004 17:32

transco on their way

OP posts:
lydialemon · 06/02/2004 17:35

No, from experience Transco man is usually very nice. The last one was quite fit too!

Beccarollover · 06/02/2004 17:38

dont say that now ill have to tidy AND do my hair

Transco will fix it if they can do it in 30 minutes. My guy stayed 2 hours but couldn't fix it so my meter box was condemned. He did tell me that you'd have to leave 3 rings of your gas cooker on for a whole weekend for there to be enough gas for the house to blow up - if that reassures you . Also, I'd been smelling gas for about 5 years before I eventually rang, more out of curiosity really.

Got it fixed next morning for £50. I know this is a lot when you are skint but just trying to reassure you taht it might not be to horrendous

Beccarollover · 06/02/2004 18:02

he is sealing the boiler now - it is a leak

didnt try to fix it tho?

OP posts:
marthamoo · 06/02/2004 18:50

Oh becca Hope it doesn't cost too much to fix.

Beccarollover · 06/02/2004 18:58

im SO pleased i rang he said carbon monoxide is what causes headaches so its lucky i could smell gas as well to ring as carbon monoxide doesnt smell

PHEW

Thanks for the advice girls
