Kids here do activities on a Wednesday, so this afternoon I dropped two off at judo and took the baby to listen to stories at the library. I left the dog tied up outside (as usual). About 20 minutes I heard the dog yelping, and as I got up I saw a librarian running out and shouting out "whose dog is it?"

There was a gaggle of kids around my labrador, hooting and cheering as a four or five year old laid into the crouching dog with his feet, kicking and kicking the dog. A woman (their mother) was standing watching.

I ran out and the librarian grabbed the little boy, who was just calmly walking away, she asked him if he would like to be kicked like the dog and he just laughed as did all the other children and the woman. The librarian and I did our stuff, trying to explain that he should not do that and that it was wrong and really telling them off. They all just laughed, and the woman just smiled then they all sauntered off laughing and taking the piss out of my accent and what I had said. The oldest child couldnt have been more than 10 and the youngest was about three.

My dog was limping on the way home but seems fine now. In retrospect I wish I'd called the police.

There should have been a question mark after "their mother". God knows.

little ** and as for the motherShockAngry hope your dog is ok

poptot · 31/05/2006 17:26

I'd phone them now can you identify any of the children or can the librarian?

nothercules · 31/05/2006 17:27

Sad Angry

I hope this experience doesnt have a long term effect on your dog ie make it nervous.

nothercules · 31/05/2006 17:29

Perhaps there was some sort of cctv there?

Not the same, but my neighbours a few doors down often allow their kids to tease my dog by woofing loudly at him and throwing balls in my garden. I've been round to return their ball and ask them to stop as although my dog barks,it's because it makes him nervous and a nervous dog is a dangerous dog.

They think it's okay because he's a large dog.

foxinsocks · 31/05/2006 17:31

they are lucky he didn't bite them (bet the mother wouldn't laugh then)

poor, poor dog - how awful. I would call the police and perhaps ask the librarian if she recognises any of them.

(nothercules, how ridiculous of your neighbours. Are people just plain stupid? (hate using that word but you know what I mean))

catsmother · 31/05/2006 17:39

No .....if the little brat had been (very deservedly) bitten, no doubt "mother" would have been onto a "compo" solicitor quicksmart.

Do check if there's any CCTV footage. It may even be worth going to the police now (who knows, they may be experiencing a "quiet" period and can check the street CCTV). Or they may have received similar complaints perhaps.

Hope the poor dog is ok now.

This sort of thing makes me really Angry and Sad. What kind of people are they? Why are there such shitty people in the world? Sometimes I wish I could do a Grizzly Adams, and live in the middle of nowhere, so I wouldn't have to deal with them!!

handlemecarefully · 31/05/2006 18:00

That's just awful. Hope your poor dog is okay. How bloody horrendous. It is so fortunate that it wasn't me in your situation because I have an incendiary temper and I would have struggled to contain myself. I expect you're really upset and shaken.

Agree with others that you should report it to the police even though several hours have passed.

Piffle · 31/05/2006 18:02

Thats awful, there is an awful lot of evidence that children that abuse animals, come from abusive homes or go on to be an abuser.
Worth reporting.
