My ds 12 adores his films
DS is now seriously into Manga artwork and design
Whooooooosh over my head but hey...

serenity · 30/05/2006 20:04

DH and DS1(8) love his films. DS1 had a great time going to see Howl's Moving Castle with DH last year. It's nice for the kids to watch a slightly more intelligent 'cartoon' film occasionally Grin

I asked DH if he could recommend anything similar, but he says that Miyazaki is pretty unique. Most other anime/manga tends towards the violent fighty sort of stuff. DH says have a look at \link{http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/1591164087/qid=1149015781/sr=8-2/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i2_xgl/202-7033077-3039068\these books}, they're pretty cheap and they extend and expand on the film. There's 7 in the series.

thanks serenity, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is one on my fav ones, me and dp took my dd1 (4) to the cinema last year to see howls moving castle and we loved it but every one else in the place walked out. i have also found that the other anime/manga stuff is a bit violent, i just like to watch films that the whole family can watch but i enjoy it to, IYKWIM

We have the collection of Studio Ghibli dvd's and even though it's in Japanese my kids love 'em (so do we). I thought Spirited Away was beautiful!
Totoro is an obvious hit and I've lost count of the amount of times we've seen it. I also like Porko Rosso. He is the fairy storyteller of our time for me, exquisite artwork too.

jennifersofia · 08/06/2006 22:20

Yeah, we love them. I have dd's, 3.5 and 5 and Totoro and Kiki have been the favourites so far. I also like Nausicaa and Spirited Away, but girls haven't seen those (they get scared easily). The other one where there is the wolf girl (Princess Mononoke) is amazing too. I keep thinking about this amazing scene in one of the films where there is a girl who discovers this whole underwater environment and she meets a boy there - is that Nausicaa, or another?
I thought Laputa and Pom Poko and My neighbours the Yamadas were not quite so good.
If you are London based, the Barbican family film club is having a Miyazaki mini-season where they will be showing Spirited Away, Kiki and Totoro during the month of January.

bresha · 09/06/2006 09:23

yes jennifersofia, that scene is in Nausicaa,
i like
Porko Rosso to, it had no real point or ending, but i thought that was a nice change form the normal.
wow im glad im not the only one who is a fan! none of my friends have ever heard of him and don’t really like that sort of thing

Yes, another big fan. Just bought a Totoro DVD off e-bay a few days ago, in fact. And I've seen Spirited Away no end of times. Saw Howls Moving Castle with my kids the day it opened in NYC last year. . .I literally couldn't wait. Interesting to hear about these other films of his, which I haven't seen.

I don't really know anyone who does similar type films, BUT there's that quite good French animated film from 2003may be too grown-up for kids, but maybe notcalled "The Triplets of Belleville." It's more wry, less innocent, but awfully quirky. . .

I'm a bit obsessed with Hong Kong/Japanese/Korean films--though apparently the ones that we get over here are specifically marketed to western audiences, which is interesting. If you're looking to rent films for yourself (these would NOT be suitable for kids) I'd recommend directors like Wang Kar Wai (Hong Kong), and basically all those Tartan Asia Extreme films like Park Chan-Wook's (Korean) vengeance trilogy (Old Boy is great, but violent & difficult with themes like incest). And then there's the Japanese film Battle Royale. The Asia Extreme films tend to be violent. For a purely beautiful and non-violent Japanese film, there's After Life directed by Korreda Horokazu.

Don't know if this answers your questions, but maybe we have similar taste, so maybe you'd like these other films too.

Medea · 09/06/2006 11:15

Bresha, I just saw your post about how you prefer to watch films the whole family can watch. So ignore my paragraph about Asia Extreme!

But I think the Triplets of Belleville can be watched by whole fam.

bresha · 09/06/2006 14:12

i had a look on the net for that Japanese film after life, looks good i will give that ago,
iff my dd has been good i let her stay up one night at the weekend to watch a film with us, we wont something she can watch but we still enjoy it ,
but me and dp will look out for the other films u mentioned to watch our self :)

OP posts:
jennifersofia · 09/06/2006 20:21

Thanks bresha, will have to watch that again.
Is triplets of Belleville in any way related to Belleville Rendez-vous? That is an animated french take off (sort of) about the Tour de France. Fantastic. Also saw a great (though a little scary for my littlies) film that is animated and from Africa called Kirikou. Very fascinating re: African culture, and also well drawn.
Nice thread, btw.

Medea · 11/06/2006 21:43

Yes, Jennifersofia, Triplets of Belleville is the same as Belleville Rendez-Vous. . .I think it's just translatied differently in America, and that's the source of the title discrepancy.

Fillyjonk · 11/06/2006 21:45

the man butchered howl's moving castle.

howl was meant to be welsh!

Actually I did love spirited away very much, inteligent anime is great!

bresha · 12/06/2006 08:59

Fillyjonk- i don’t think he butchered howl's moving castle, the book was totally different to the film but i loved them both, i thought the door leading to Wales (in the book) was great, and so random

OP posts:
FillyjonktheFluffy · 12/06/2006 16:39

ok, I loved howl's moving castle the book from when I was about 6 or so, also, i live in wales, so the wales stuff was important to me.

but the real issue I had with the film was that is was not very funny, at least not compared to the book.

and while i am the biggest anti-war believer in the world, to turn the film into war=bad...it didn't work.

and howl was a complex, also welsh, character in the book. this whole cutesy thing just didn't work.

dunno. i looked forward for ages to seeing it, but it made me sad.
