Jennifersofia brought up this topic in another thread

(What do you think is a reasonable yearly clothing budget? (No, really!)

which brings me to this thread and one can judge it from there IMO.

This is the situation. You need to prepare a young woman who has a child(boy or girl)with a wardrobe, what items do you think she needs in order for her not to spend too much money on clothes for the year. She has no clothes for herself (therefore in her birthday suit) and you are chosen to provide her with some for work and play.

Are we clothing the woman? Are we doing an absolute minimum - does she have a washing machine/tumble drier or is she having to use the laundrette one a week?

GenT · 03/02/2004 19:13

Yep, you are clothing her and she is fully caplable of taking care of the clothes as most women are.

She can be a SAHM or you can prepare her to work part-time in the future.

She is married already so there is no need to buy a wedding dress.

Hmm, started a blithe answer and ground to a halt. Will think about this....

GenT · 03/02/2004 19:20

how about some pajamas or underwear for starters

OP posts:
Oakmaiden · 03/02/2004 19:21

Shall we say she does her washing once a week? No, she has a child - twice a week then.

Oakmaiden · 03/02/2004 19:23

So she will need 4 pairs of panties and 2 bras (PLEASE say I'm not the only one who doesn't wear a clean bra every day!). Socks or tights - depending on whether she prefers trousers or skirts. 4 pairs. 2 nighties/old t-shirts/PYs for bed.

Oakmaiden · 03/02/2004 19:25

casual wear - 2 pairs of trousers or skirts, 4 tops and 2 jumpers/cardies/whatever. A pair of outdoor shoes and a pair of houseshoes.

smartwear - 1 outfit with shoes.

And an outdoor waterproof coat.

Oakmaiden · 03/02/2004 19:25

You could live with that, I reckon... have I frgotten anything?

GenT · 03/02/2004 19:39

washing once a week, in case she is sick for 3 days out of the week.

I would say at least one underwear for a day, how about a set that has the days of the week on the bum like the kids

she should have a outfit to attend to any of life's social functions, be it a parent/teacher meeting, going out for a meal, attending a wedding, nip to the pub, a weekend in the country, I don't know, she isn't glued to the home but must be prepared for anything that comes her way....even bad weather or an impromptu holiday....

OP posts:
stupidgirl · 03/02/2004 19:41

I reckon you need more underwear than that - to allow for washing and drying...and emergencies! (I have a recurring nightmare of running out of underwear - lost my knickers when swimming with school once - I never got over it!)

Oakmaiden · 03/02/2004 19:41

She is a mother - she will have to do the washing even if she is ill. Besides if she should be ill enough for huband to stay home and look after child then she will probably stay in bed and not need clothes.

GenT · 03/02/2004 19:45

but then the doorbell rings with a special delivery......is she wearing anything at that point?

They are a bit skint and only have enough washing powder to do the baby's clothes, the sacrifices we make

OP posts:
Oakmaiden · 04/02/2004 19:48

If they are that skint she should be making laundry gloop. And if they can't even manage that, then how is she financing this new wardrobe?

GenT · 04/02/2004 20:22

You are her wardrobe fairygodmother

casual wear

  • 2 pairs of trousers or skirts,
  • 4 tops and 2 jumpers/cardies/whatever.
  • house shoes, casual outdoor shoes and a pair of dress shoes

What exactly is the point of this? (said in a completely unconfrontational way - unlike how it sounds )

GenT · 04/02/2004 20:43

Do we own more clothes than we really need?

How much clothes do we actually need to meet any of life's social events?

let me think......less clothes less clutter

OP posts:
bobthebaby · 04/02/2004 22:31

Apparently we wear 20% of our clothes 80% of the time. So obviously it's our duty to have as many as possible so that 20% gives us lots of great outfits.

motherinferior · 05/02/2004 08:20

BTB, you are a genius
