I've put so many 'why doesn't he' 'how do I' 'can anyone help' questions on here (and had THE most brilliant answers - thank god for Mumsnet) but today I had the most blissful day with ds - he was all smiles (well at least until I produced the dreaded sleeping bag) and we did little else but laze around and grin at each other as the rain hammered down outside. So...in praise of little babies,

  1. isn't their big open mouthed goony beaming smile the best thing you have EVER seen?

  2. does anyone else find the back of their baby's head just irresistable - tufty hair, low set ears, the crinkles on the back of the neck

  3. I feel mean doing it but sometimes I have to laugh at his repertoire of cries, the 'police siren' woo woo woo of the early weeks has gone as has the very wibbly lower lip (and much missed they both are) but the 'cak cak cak' that has replaced them is soooo sweet, even while being heartbreaking and making you want to pick him up and snuggle him even if it IS bedtime

sorry I'm just a soppy first time mum....

And the way he cackles and grabs my hair when I pretend to eat his tummy.....

And that dopey look when he's not quite awake yet and rubs his eyes. Sooo cute....

Can you kiss babies' heads too much??

suzywong · 01/02/2004 22:00

Squirmy
I feel exactly the same and I'm a second time mum, it never changes.
I get a particularly big head rush and quivers down my spine when both my boys are sitting on my knee and I can kiss the top of one head and then the other

stupidgirl · 01/02/2004 22:14

I miss having a little one. Not that my big(ger) ones aren't perfectly gorgeous and adorable in their own ways. It just goes by so fast, doesn't it?

Lisa78 · 01/02/2004 22:15

and that snuggly feeling when they are sleepy and snoozly

Lethal · 01/02/2004 22:16

Squirmy, agree with you on number 2 - I love the backs of their heads. I remember watching ds from behind while dh was holding him on his knee, patting him on the back trying to bring up wind after a feed - from the back he looked like a little Yoda, but totally cute and helpless.

My ds still makes me chuckle sometimes when I see his head from the back, it reminds me of when he was a baby.

prettycandles · 01/02/2004 22:16

The backs of their heads...oh yes . And the special smells, that no-one else can smell, that you breathe in when you kiss their heads.

I don't think I'd be any less soppy if I had 20 children!

Posey · 01/02/2004 22:18

Have to agree with all those things. But just now what REALLY gets me everytime is when me, dh or dd says, Time to go or time for bed or time for school, anything like that and ds puckers up for a kiss (even if he's across the room involved in his cars, and makes lots of kissy noises - mmwwaah! Will we remember all this? I hope so.

Thanks for starting this thread squirmyworm!

My toddler has been adorable today: really fun, inquisitive, cheerful. Why is it that in the sections about toddlers in all the books they list all the negatives and none of the really cool stuff?!

aloha · 01/02/2004 22:41

My boy is nearly 2/1/2 and his head still smells and feels like the most perfect peach of summer. He's so funny, and beautiful and wonderful I wonder every single day what I did that was so good that let me have this person in my life. For me, it's got better and better. He makes me melt. His arms and legs are like butter and velvet. He says the most wonderful, utterly unexpected things. He LOVES me. Can it get better than this?

GenT · 01/02/2004 23:11

I gave my dd a bath today and she plays with little ducky. Before I give her ducky, I fill it with some water and squirt it on her, she just sits there cackling away hysterically. DD looks so cute esp. with two little bottom teeth emerging.

I also like when she has slept too much, she has bags under her eyes and looks adorable. I just grab her and snuggle her forever.

I can sit and watch her play by herself with wonder, then make those lovely noises.

yes, soppy we are....

suzywong · 02/02/2004 00:04

Ah yes, the scent of a little one who has just woken up from a nap, when my big boy gets up from his afternoon nap I always make sure he has a cuddle with mama til he comes round. He always says 'Mama, ...... I'm OK'.

The feeling of a little warm hand in yours when your walking along. Still gets to me when walking with DS1 (nearly 5) to school.

The best thing is when they go to sleep on you. I so rarely seem to have the time to indulge this nowadays though. I always have to resist the urge to climb into bed behing DS2 when I kiss him good night on my way to bed. All snuggled up with his bears in a bed that's too big for him.

Angeliz · 02/02/2004 09:37

My dd is 2.11 and like Aloha says, she says the most wonderful things, her latest thing is "mammy, what would i do without you?",(i think it's taken from tractor tom but still....).
I love the way she toddles in to my room at 6/7 and climbs in for a snuggle and then says, "is it time to get up mammy?".
I love the way when her nose runs she says "ahhh shnozzle", ( i said it when she was little as a joke and it's stuck).
I love the soft skin on the very end of her eyebrow, when we watch t.v i rub my lips on it, and her squidgy thighs

Oh EVERYTHING They are a privelege

Agree that you could have 20 and still be like a marshmallow when they cuddle up to you or say something sweet. I love a good armful of hulking schoolboy and fairy-like baby girl, especially when they are gurning at each other while sitting on your lap. I especially love the way dd has just started to stroke me very gently while feeding...

Beccarollover · 02/02/2004 10:28

They are great arent they?

I love this thread - some really lovely posts.

I love seeing my two together - gives me butterflies to see DD being so loving and caring towards DS and DS just looks up at her with utter adoration

Bless!

When my boys were babies, just laying down and smelling their heads would make me instantly fall asleep.
Sometimes I really love those grey, rainy, days, because it gives us all an excuse to snuggle up and just not even try to go anywhere.A bit different now for me though, as they went to F/T school in September, and I still really miss them, but half trem is only round the corner, can't wait !!!And lets hope for at least one rainy day !!!!

slug · 02/02/2004 10:39

Sturdy baby thighs.

Is there anything more adorable?

womba1 · 02/02/2004 10:40

I love....

baby sneezes that are followed by a sigh..

the smile i get and the excited giggle when i go into my ds nursey in the morning...

when he puts his arms up to be cuddled..

the fact he looks like me when he's awake and my dh when asleep..

the fact that he'll always be my baby boy....even when he's an adult!
