Can anyone remember how it worked? They are threatened round here for later in the summer and I saw a man checking the waterboard manhole covers yesterday...Was the water only on for a few hours a day or not at all on some days? I seem to remember us having a bath permanently full of water..
I am (ahem) old enough theoretically to remember but obviously too preoccupied with boys and exams to have given it any importance!

I think I'd better start potty training DS sooner rather than later.

Horror of mid-August with loads of accidents and no water Grin

jac - they are predicting similiar weather this year, so we might yet get the '76 heat.

What is currently annoying me is in our area we have a house pipe ban, so I am battling to keep my garden alive and in a decent state to be appreciated by those potrntial buyers coming to view our house, Whereas our friends down the road are allowed to fill their huge swimming pool in their garden.

If I remember rightly the ladybirds used to bite!! I remember being chased off the school tennis courts by biting ladybirds Grin.

In defence of the water companies although I totally agree that they need to sort out leaks, we are getting used to a different climate. Let's face it it's quite hard to think of the UK as a drought-ridden country! In a very wet climate the cost of urgently mending miles of old pipes probably didn't seem all that worth while. And having the water companies to whinge at does let consumers off the hook a bit - why try to cut back when those lazy ba*tards are just wasting it anyway? It's down to us too isn't it?

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 19/05/2006 11:58

Lots of wasps in '76 too. Don't think we had standpipes but I do remember the restrictions. didn't we have snow really late that year too? End of May I think.

We've been laughing about the possible drought here - my over the road neighbours have had to move out this week after been flooded out on Monday night. Seven of the houses in our road had up to 2 feet of water on the ground floor.....pretty ironic really.

CountessDracula · 19/05/2006 12:03

good article \link{http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/features/understanding/1976_drought.shtml\here} about it

The temperatures weren't nearly as high as for eg 2003

ohh god no flushing the loo unless you do a number 2 and buckets of dirty water saved from washing up etc for garden and toilet. Veggie plot to be watered and leave the rest as it's not important girls.

Dh just loves these moments. Eg in CD's link, it said no rain fell at all in Cornwall in April. Dh comes from the subtropics and was used to no rain for months everywhere!

nannyme · 19/05/2006 13:17

If it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown flush it down, yes?!

mummyhill · 19/05/2006 13:39

Got it in one nannyme

I've just phoned United Utilities Leak Line to report a leak, the water is actually bubbling through the pavement, and was kept on hold for 10 minutes as they were 'experiencing a particularly high demand' mmmm rather worrying and we aren't short of a gallon or two of water here either!
