Just looked at what's on tele tonight to discover that Channel 4 has a programme at 10pm on designer vaginas*... California latest trend ! What will they think of next ! Anyway I thought this would be a good topic for tomorrow's discussions.....

  • For aesthetic reasons or to improve sensation after childbirth - I read.

Grizzler - that's it, fistula, I just couldn't remember the right term. Glad to hear everything is ok with you now, sounds like you've had a rough time.

I watched the update on adoption too, I couldn't quite get to grips with the religous lady. I found the update on the other couple who had adopted the 2 girls was moving (especially when the girls were talking to their brother who had to be separately adopted). I'm so glad they managed to stay together when they really did look like they were on the verge of splitting. He seemed such a calm, good bloke.
PAMINA what was the other programme you watched, was it an update on the same programme? I didn't see another one, if it was who died?

jodee · 23/01/2002 19:03

Pamina, I saw the programme where the adoptive Mum died, it was upsetting; I thought the husband was very brave and very open with his feelings, not many men would like to be seen crying in public let alone on tv.
I wasn't sure about the other couple with the 3 kids; they seemed lovely parents and were all getting on well, but if they had felt their calling was to adopt rather than have their own natural children it seemed strange to put themselves (he wasn't too keen) through the stress of trying then IVF only to be disappointed .

Eulalia · 23/01/2002 19:15

Grizzler - totally agree with you. This programme could have been quite serious and tackled an issue that doesn't get enough coverage. Like so many TV progs though it has to sensationalise the subject. The fact also that many of these women were merely getting their bits done just for cosmetic reasons seems to triviliase women's sexuality and some people are bound to laugh at it. I have a friend whose baby came out with his arm above his head and caused a lot of damage. It took a year before she had a proper operation to correct the damage. I am sure these problems are more common than we realise.

I think I remember the programme about the African women. If I remember rightly they were actually children, forced into marriage too young and then bore children before their bodies were physically able to cope with it.

I too saw the programme with the couple of evangelical Christians who adopted the three siblings....and I couldn't get a handle on her at all...don't know what to make of her. Originally, their motive for adopting was because they didn't want to 'make' their own baby, but to help other children. Yet shortly after adopting, she must have changed her mind...the timing of it was that less than 2 years after adopting they were accepted for IVF, and they had been through some time of being unable to conceive, so they must have been trying to conceive virtually straight away after the adoptions.Of course, anyone is allowed to change their mind, but this was a very sudden turn round. Having said that, from what one could see, the children appeared happy, and the couple seemed genuine as parents.

jasper · 24/01/2002 02:02

So sorry I missed part two of the adoption updates.
Yes I did think the evangelicals who adopted three children were very odd, but very genuine. I just couldn't understand how they felt so strongly "called" NOT to try for babies of their own, perhaps in conjunction with adopting too. Can you imagine going from no kids to a family of three overnight?
Was she very upset when the IVF failed?

Janus · 24/01/2002 08:22

Pamina, I can't believe I missed this update as I thought they were a lovely family and I can so remember the Mother as being so positive. I can't believe she died. How did I miss this programme, when was it on? I do also remember the Father being such a practical and yet warm man - I remember they were supporting the Romanian boy's mother with a monthly income. Can't believe she died, I hope they all cope.

I would like to see an update in a couple of years too Pamina. I felt really sorry for the Lady that couldn't try IVF. She really seemed to be battling with her own maternal feelings for having her own child, I wonder whether other adopted parents go through these feelings.

On another sad note, did anyone watch Life before birth last night? I would say anyone who's pregnant probably shouldn't watch, it was really heartbraking, it even brought dh to tears.

ChanelNo5 · 24/01/2002 23:25

jac - I was wondering why nobody had mentioned 'Life Before Birth' seeing as this a mum's site. I agree, it was really heartbreaking, it made me cry too. Also made me realise how lucky I am to have 3 healthy kiddies.

I didn't realise Designer Vaginas was part of a series on C4 about extreme surgery - apparently next Tuesday it's called Bone Breakers, people having bones broken or removed to improve the way they look. I can't think of any possible reason to do this apart from extreme vanity, but I could be wrong so will be tuning in next week.

Selja · 25/01/2002 20:24

We saw about five minutes of the Designer Vaginas programme - it was the bit about larger lady. My dh took one look and said she should save her money and get plastic surgery on her face first - and they say men aren't bitchy!

Rhiannon · 26/01/2002 09:57

Don't know if I'm weird but I love all those kind of programmes! I was convincing myself that the baby that had to have the platelet transfers was going to be OK but when the mother was talking at the end she was choked up so It was then giving me doubts. The makers kept us all hanging on, it was brilliant.

Apparenetly Dr Kypros does a private surgery too but takes no money! Read this in DM (ssh). R

Tinker · 26/01/2002 10:44

Have to say, I found Dr Kypros rather attractive - shallow, shallow, shallow!

Ems · 26/01/2002 20:12

Tinker, I too thought he was nice!! Would we have found him attractive if he was in a different profession though I wondered? He was so wonderful with the mums-to-be, great communicator. Fantastic programme.
