Ok, just because this is a grammar thread, I'm going to say, Oliver Sachs woman, that you want "affects" there.

(Effects is nearly always a noun. Affect is nearly always a verb.)

the problem with these threads is that we none of us pay much attention to what we type on mn. (well I don;t anyway) hardly merits serious proof-reading does it. damn. damn. damn. you are of course right that it should have been affect but I don;t agree that effect is hardly ever a verb. It's a more unusual verb than affect but not that unusual.

JanH · 17/05/2006 13:23

It has a different meaning though - affect means (approx) have an effect on and effect means (approx) to take effect.

NotQuiteCockney · 17/05/2006 15:04

The only time I ever see "effect" used as a verb is in the phrase "to effect a change". Hmm, looked it up: 'to bring about; accomplish'. Really only used in a jargony annoying way. (And affect, as a noun, is really only used in a psych way.)

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 17/05/2006 15:37

[counter-pedantic attack]I never said it had the same meaning nor did my post imply that it had. In fact it implies the opposite, otherwise why would I have conceded that the original sentence should have used "affect"

I think you'll find an acute accent is required.

Touché.

And, as you are a MEMBER of the gentler sex, may I suggest:

Touchée ?

Grin

Oh you showoff, M Hub, with your MEMBERs and your é's Grin

(Can you switch keyboards with a Mac or do you do it with numbers?)

hub2dee · 17/05/2006 18:02

Easier than that JanH... you hit the option key and then e and it goes into acute mode, you can then hit e, a etc... same with umlauts etc.

Macs rock. Grin
