A parcel was delivered to our house just after christmas, and from the packaging I'd say it was definitely 3 bottles of wine as a Corporate Christmas gift. I was so tired and befumbled in my mind that I heard myself saying "It's not for us, that person doesn't live here anymore..."

Reckon you were right to send the tax money back: they always find out, and you wouldn't have been allowed to keep it. I wouldn't have been so nice to Tesco, though!

twiglett, I am like that too, this happened in Boots - I once put a £1.69 bottle of mouthwash on top of the folded pushchair hood whilst asking the pharmacy assistant which cough syrup I needed, paid for the cough syrup and walked out without noticing the mouthwash.

When I got home I felt so guilty that I walked all the way back (1 hour walk in the rain!), got v embarrassed explaining to the assistant what I had done and then found I only had £1.68 in my purse. (She let me have it for £1.68)

Yep. You were right to send the tax money back but I keep mistakes from Tescos deliveries since they've caused me SO much hassle in the past.

Take heart that it was probably good to come clean on the IR thing - they would have sussed it in the end and you would have had to pay it all back (when perhaps you might have already spent it)

But the Tesco thing....how frustrating! I'm surprised they are bothering to collect from you....it would probably be easier for them to reissue from the store...

Think I would have been the same although re. Inland revenue I would have banked the £3,000 and sent them back a cheque for what they had overpaid me therefore ensuring that I got what I was owed - I think I would be with Blu though on the Tesco front.
Saying that - I found two £5 notes on Saturday morning and they went very nicely into my pocket.

I've given back a sainsburys order like that - mainly because it was about 3 bags of baby related items (baby food, nappies, etc) which a) i couldn't have used and b) I had visions of the mum going spare because they'd missed all that out of her shopping!

I once had £30,000 accidently paid into my bank account! After a few weeks, I decided to come clean, rang them and what a hassle. Endless phone calls, they even asked me to put it in writing? OK I agree it wasn't mine to spend but why give me all that hassle when it's their error?

As to Mr Tesco, I'd probably keep it, they wouldn't know, if they were to miss it, which delivery it was with.

You were right to own up with the taxman. They probably would have discovered their error sooner or later.

Agree with everyone re IR. They always come back for it in the end. I am pretty honest, but then so are other people. I can't tell you the number of times I've lost my purse and go it back. I warms the cockles, it does.

I'm too honest aswell Wish I wasn't at times, ie saw a lady walk away from the cash machine and leave her money behind, ran after her to give it back and she honestly looked at me as though I was offering her a slap around the face with a wet fish b4 realising that it was her money, no I didn't get a thank you but I do hope that if I ever do that someone would do the same for me.

Got delivered a huge bunch of flowers, signed for them and everything only to read the card and find out that they were for a neighbour, obviously I dropped them round straight away then had to stay for coffee for ages and ages. Oh the card was addressed to snuggle bum! Should have known realy that they weren't for me.

Got given the worng keys when collecting my car from a company, keys to a very nice Alfa instead of my polo, did give them back but grudgingly as the Alfa didn't have child seats

I'd have kept the Tesco stuff though, not even I'm honest enough to get made to wait in for them twice in one day, but that would be the only reason in not returning.

Definatley right to send Iland Rev money back. My neighbour kept, cashed and spent a cheque they sent her for 1000, and now they want it back. As for the shopping I wouldn't say a thing.

Sainsbury's did the same to me once...I kept it as they'd been 1 1/2 hours late and I was too pissed off to return it and they also missed loads of stuff off that I'd ordered.

Agree with most others on IR money although, at the moment, we have stacks of IR cash from severe overpayment of child tax credit and we cannot get an answer from them about how to pay it back quickly. They just keep saying to keep it until they ask for it, then I hear about people who can't feed their kids and feel awful. We didn't ask for it or want it, they just decded to put our annual income as 2p and so we started to get ct credit as well as family tax credit, then free prescription cards, vouchers for milk etc., which I did manage to send back.

Twiglett, if I were you, I'd call Tesco's back and tell them you were stuck in, the least they could do is refund your delivery charge (they did for me once when they messed me around).

Same sort of problem as us, Epigirl! They keep paying us Working Tax Credit although we're not supposed to have it - we sent the cheques back, they agreed it was wrong, then they sent us the same cheques again - aagh! Now they've told us to just keep it until asked - what a system!!

I'm afraid I would have kept the tesco stuff, because they couldn't guarantee that it had been in the fridge/freezer at the right temp. they will have to bin it anyway.

I would have sent the cheque back too, much to the disgust of DH. If I knew it was wrong that is!!! Yesterday £733 was paid into my bank account from DSS for Dh's incapity benifit backpay, now I knew that the payment had been stopped as Income support need to do adjustments, so I knew that the bank may send the payment straight back, but DH wanted to go and spend it fast, anyway I phoned IB and was told it had been recalled so left it there and at 10:30am it was gone again.
I am honest too, and DH hates the fact that I am so honest...........
