Its says it will get in the guinness book of records if it keeps going. It wont. GBR dont do a record for longest chain letter.
So, guessing that dd1 knows her friend has posted her something, do I bin it or tell her or pretend to post it or what???
What would you do?

Cheers CharlieCat!
I will show this to my son and let him put the pieces together.
maybe encourage him to use the Free Post to send copies of this statement (off the web page) & the copies of the chain letter to Warn his mates to always look before you leap.
maybe a good lesson in life can be learned at the end of the day.

charliecat · 16/05/2006 12:10

Yep, im hoping my dd doesnt get in a flap about it.

soon after I was bereaved some years ago i got one of those "send it on or your bad luck will never leave" types.
it was really upsetting at the time.
i have never had the slightest problem with chucking them in the bin but it felt as though someone was targetting me at a vulnerable time.
so i binned it but wondered for a long time who had sent it.

DS1 received a chain letter: well actually he received a card through the door saying we had to pay about £1.50 and collect a letter from the parcel office, as it had been posted without a stamp Shock

We were livid when we found out what it was. So we had a chat with staff at school (dh on good terms with the Head), and they covered it in assemblies the following week.

GameGirly · 17/05/2006 09:49

Oh God, I feel awful now ... Blush DD1 received the GBR one during the Easter holidays and I let her send it on. I'd no idea it was a load of tosh. Kept her busy for an hour or two, though! Apologies to anyone out there whose child received one she'd forwarded!

poppiesinaline · 17/05/2006 10:54

I always bin them cos they are a PITA. But someone please explain to me why people feel so strongly against them? (I agree by the way) but am wondering if I am missing something IYSWIM

jampots · 17/05/2006 11:01

i hate chain letters. dd gets loads of horrid ones in her inbox. I just go through and delete them

jampots · 17/05/2006 11:02

That said, Im not the luckiest person in the world Grin

AttilaTheMeerkat · 17/05/2006 12:30

Bin any chain letters that are received.

BeetrootOldDeer · 17/05/2006 12:30

mine had this as well and I binned it

BeetrootOldDeer · 17/05/2006 12:32

great link, i will tell freind about it

barefeete · 17/05/2006 12:34

I hate the way they make you feel so stupid for believing them. The worst one I ever got was an email one about a young toddler being murdered. It was just after I had my my baby and got really really emotional about it.

I found out on the internet that it was a hoax and emailed everyone on it's address list links to prove it was a hoax.

anyone had the sticker club one? I thought it was harmless fun but have been persuaded otherwise by dh. I am thinking that I will send stickers to both names on it - cos I don;t like the idea of disappointing them, and bin it.

Auntymandy · 17/05/2006 13:34

I cant see the harm in harmelss ones myself..like send a sticker to a friend, or had one once and you sent a pair of pants, it was so nice to get a couple of pairs of pants through the post!!
Thosse that threaten, then bin

3catstoo · 17/05/2006 14:30

My DD got one of these telling her to send some stickers to the first name on the list and to forward it to 10 of her friends. She is 4!! She didn't see it as I opened it for her. It's bad enough receiving it but to pass it on to her/my friends is unthinkable. It's like begging.
No thanks.
Bin it!

LIZS · 17/05/2006 14:33

er , pants !? Sure you weren't being had ?

donnie · 17/05/2006 14:36

don't bin it, recycle!!!
seriosuly though, chain letters are a waste of time and resources.....all that paper wasted annoys me.

Auntymandy · 17/05/2006 16:48

where's your sense of fun!!!
The harmless ones are just that!!
Ok 4 year old its a bit silly, but a 7 year old would love getting stickers through the post!
As I did getting my pants!!
When I was a little girl I got post cards I loved it!!
ok self confessed saddo!!!

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 17/05/2006 17:29

the problem is in the maths (so dh tells me)- they are pyramid schemes and by definition they cannot work - if they did the entire manufacturing output of the world would be dedicated to making stickers. DH's logic is that the existence of these things means that children will get disappointed - the net value in terms of pleasure from getting stickers and disappointment from not doing is inevitably (mathematically) negative. Hence breaking the chain is the responsible thing to do. I can see his point but part of me is intrigued to see what we'd get. But the pyramid concept does start to hurt my head when I think it through.

3catstoo · 17/05/2006 19:50

Of course Donnie, Recycle it! Doesn't have quite the same ring to it though. I wasn't speaking literally. Lets not cause a green debate aswell, I'll be going forever on that one !!

mousiemousie · 17/05/2006 19:55

tell the teacher

Blunderwoman · 17/05/2006 22:56

Bin it! Or if your dd is worried that she's 'breaking the chain' give it to someone you know will play along with you - someone who will satisfy your dd's worries that she's not broken the chain but who will destroy it as soon as she's out of sight but tell her they passed it on too to blah, blah, blah.

Or, if your dd is of an age to understand what a chain letter is, maybe you should encourage her to put it in the bin herself??

katzg · 18/05/2006 08:58

i've doen both the pants and the chocolate ones and i got a few pairs of pants and a couple of bars of choc - i think they are just harmless fun but the ones which say if you break this chain you will have 7 years bad luck ect are just plain nasty!

admylin · 18/05/2006 15:59

My dd (aged 7) just got the german version of this saying exactly the same -GBR, send on witin 4 days etc... I binned it of course but what makes me think is that all the other 5 addresses on the back of the envelope are from kids who I would have thought their parents knew better - they are from academic familys but obviously out of touch with the real world. My dd was quite happy to bin it when I told her what she could get instead for the price of all those stamps.

UCM · 18/05/2006 18:55

I did have a very humourous one about sending a pair of knickers on (new obviously) with your size and got 2 thongs out of it. It was quite a good idea really as everyone knows 10 women, well almost.

What I really hate are the emails which promise you lots of love & friends if you send them on. I never do.

I also recieved the chain email about 'james bulger' which I binned.
