Please help.

My darling sister has horrificly bad OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder). She also has keloids. Keloids are basically a greatly enlarged scar that projects above the skin surface. A scar usually becomes flat. Unfortunately, sometimes scars enlarge to form firm, smooth, hard growths called keloids.
My sister has about 8 on her back and due to her ocd she has the most awful self loathing, no self asteem whatsoever. I won't bore you with how this affects her, every day of her life, paranoid that peope have seen them and so on.

Anyway, I need to talk to her and try and do something to help, my mum is in pieces and my poor sister is just only going backwards.

Anyway, as part of my talk I want to point out beautiful women that also have scars, disfigurements etc.

I can only think of Mrs McCartney having lost a leg.
Who else is there that I can point out to her?

its a little too feminist .. everythign is the fault of men IIRC .. but still has immense validity for women today I think

i know its not the same but i once had a bf with a big, obvious scar running all down his face. i can honestly say after our initial meeting i never even noticed it anymore and i thought he was lovely looking, fancied him like crazy. all i ever thought when i first saw it was "oh, its a scar" and that was it. in fact, it wasnt just that i didnt "notice" it anymore, i just didnt "see" it anymore. it would surprise me when people who had never met him asked how he got it, i would suddenly remember it was there and i saw him every day.

twiglett - beyonce looks so much better in the 'before' picture!

The singer Anastacia has a large scar on her stomach due to surgery for Chrohns Disease. She no longer covers it up.

Nightowl, I can relkate to that. My BIL has a large scar on his face. When dh first met him he asked me afterwards what had happened, and I honestly had to think for a few minutes before I realised what he was talking about. You simply cease to see it after a while. Actually I think the most memorable thing about BIL is his resemblence to Martin Clunes Grin

Bloody hell, Twig, that retoucher's site is scary Shock

The woman was absolutely stunning before and they have ended up making her look like a plastic, inhuman doll

:(

I really think the human race is f*cked when we prefer looking at a digitised photo shop picture than at a real human being

FrannyandZooey · 13/05/2006 15:53

I enjoyed seeing the \link{http://ww4.lhj.com/lhj/story.jhtml?storyid=/templatedata/lhj/story/data/jamieleecurtistruethighs_08212002.xml\untouched photos of Jamie Lee Curtis} when they came out. I think she looked great - but very very normal!

SexyUndiesLady · 13/05/2006 15:54

Amanda Redman is gorgeous - I would love to look like her, scar and all!

The girl from ER that was in Bend it like Beckham, burn scars on her right leg were real, they wrote it into the script.

lionhearted · 13/05/2006 16:13

how about the woman (tv presenter) who has alapacia (sp?) whose name I can never remember, either.

Nikkinoo · 13/05/2006 16:29

Gail Porter - she is a brave girl and now totally bald and still beautiful, she gets alot of unnecessary stick too

Foundintranslation - we have massive prob with the hard drive on the pc, taken me all weeked to get back online and now I can't get my emails so not ignoring yu just not seen it yet.

Thanks for all your posts.

wigglet - I am under no illusions that I can touch her obsessions with a chat to her. We've lived with this for 16 years and I know that talikng to her big sis isn't going to make it all go away, it won't make the slightest difference, I know that. I'm not hoping to have a heart to heart, tell of women in the public eye who dispite some imperfections are regarded as beautiful and successful and take all her apin and problems away. But things are so bad right now, my mum is so stressed, my sister so ill, so sad, so desperate, that I need to do something and talking is a good place to start. This small part of a pretty pointless chat is to hope to reach Julie, the person behind the ocd, and maybe help to realise that other people see her beauty and try and make her feel just a teeny bit better for a moment or two. it's just an idea, i don't know where else to start.
