I think there's a wasps nest in our house somewhere - how do i find it?

Hi

been in new house about a month, and every day have seen at least one wasp in the house. i always let them out a window, so it's not the same one i'm seeing over and over! I'm convinced that there is a nest somewhere in/around the house. Any tips on how i find it? I've been trying to observe where they come from etc, but haven't picked up anything other than they are usually upstairs...

Have you looked in the loft?

plummymummy · 12/05/2006 12:21

Yes the loft is a usual suspect with wasps. Also the eaves and even in between tiles. They are buggers aren't they.

ja9 · 12/05/2006 12:22

eh, no! is that the obvious first place to look? what am i looking for? is it dangerous to go hunting? [terrified emoticon]

Meaning roof tiles

Beauregard · 12/05/2006 12:23

Send your dh/dp up Grin

They like air vent too.

plummymummy · 12/05/2006 12:26

It is scary. I went hunting in our loft and a huge one flew towards me. I jumped with fright and fell over some wood we had stored in the loft. Then I scrambled down the ladder in a very undignified manner, cutting and bruising myself on the way. Despite the injuries I felt relieved that I hadn't been stung Grin You could get pest control in to do it.

waterfalls · 12/05/2006 12:27

If you turn everything off so the house is very quiet, you are likely to hear a nest if you get close enough.

waterfalls · 12/05/2006 12:28

Do you have your windows open everyday, there may be a nest in your garden.

ja9 · 12/05/2006 12:44

we got pest control out at a previous house, but we knew where the nest was then.

waterfalls - i said to dh, 'i think i can hear buzzing' last night when i was sittingin the quiet living room.......... he roared with laughter at me!

I think that wasps are considered a "pest" and you can probably get the council around to deal with the problem - whether you are in private or public housing.

JanH · 12/05/2006 12:56

We had a wasp nest in our bathroom roof last summer (Victorian terrace house, bathroom has its own roof closed away from the main roof) and they didn't bother us at all - I did call in the council's pest control people but they said the wasps wouldn't come in the house and they didn't - I didn't believe them but it was true, amazingly, they just buzzed in and out through the slates 2 storeys up, even though the bathroom window was open most of the time just below the slates.

Don't panic about a nest just yet - 1 a day isn't a lot and in fact it's very early for wasps, that might be an old one which has overwintered in your house and thinks it lives there Smile

Um - it could be a queen:

Maybe you should put it to sleep just in case...

ja9 · 12/05/2006 13:07

dh did see something that he thought looked like an old (now unused) nest under the house when he was doing wiring...

Beg to differ on wasps not coming in the house - sorry to seem to directly contradict you JanH. My parents had an infestation and the wasps chewed ~(yes really chewed, I saw it for myself) through the timber roof & walpaper & made a nest inside the upper wardrobe corner cupboard.
My mother was more freaked out than she can remember being when she opened it to find out what the humming noise was!!

mythumbelinas · 12/05/2006 13:21

i've been told you can buy can of something to kill the nest. It has a long thin nozzle and comes out in foam form to spray/cover the nest. You have to be careful and stand back and get out of the way if you need to though!!
Don't know much else i'm afraid

we had one the yr before in our loft, the alarm guy told us when we fitted alarm in month after we moved in .. said it was dying out.

JanH · 12/05/2006 13:23

OMG, Bugsy Shock - your poor mum!

We did get corpses eventually - the bathroom ceiling has 3 of those bullseye halogen lights in and I didn't dare change dead bulbs until the weather turned cold (it got very dim in the bathroom Grin) and when I did finally remove the old bulbs a cascade of bits of dead wasp and other rubbish fell on my head.

It must depend on where they build the nest then - or how much other wood there is around - I hope ours haven't chewed through all our roof timbers rather than come in the house (visions of roof collapsing under weight of dead wasps and weakened wood).

ja9, I think if I were you I would whack any wasps that come in the house for the next few weeks!

Steppy1 · 12/05/2006 13:28

..we had one under one of our outside tiles, but similar to metnionted here you could hear them "chewing" i thought something was in one of the beams but the little buggers were stripping the wall from the outside to build the nest. mr Exterminator turned up from the council, (still cost £40 quid though !) very macho ..and sprayed them with the lethal powder stuff....no more wasps !!!
