if you register on 18866.com you can get cheap calls - you will have to wait until you are registered on the system but iirc that was done quite quickly and it is v v cheap. My sister lives in Spain and it's 2p/minute, plus UK landline calls are free. They bill your card monthly - last month I paid £2.43, and I speak to dsis at least weekly.

ooh yeh i did 18866 recently thanks to mn, it's great, so much cheaper than bt

america is 2p per min and thailand is 15p

\link{http://www.18185.co.uk/index2.php\18185} is better than 18866 - I think (they all keep changing their rates) - has the cheapest rates for calls to mobiles anyway and to most foreign desitnations last time I looked. (\link{http://www.call1899.co.uk/index2.php\1899} best for UK calls - connection charge is 3p, 18866 is 4p.)

They are all the same company but you have to register separately for each one. And keep checking their rates because they don't update you.

JanH · 11/05/2006 20:16

(Thailand is 1p a min with 18185, lou. God knows how they do it.)

trix1 · 11/05/2006 20:35

What about calls to the republic of Ireland?

JanH · 11/05/2006 20:51

1p a min with 1899, trix - to landlines anyway. 14p with 18185, which is why you need to sign up for them all and keep checking before you ring!

oops - it hung so I sent it again!

MrsRecycle · 11/05/2006 20:55

Lou - glad my nagging worked!! It's so cheap isn't it? And you can chat away to anyone in the UK knowing its not costing you anything, apart from the connection fee.

JanH - you originally recommended 18866 to me so I'll check out the others - thanks for the links. Just goes to show you have to keep on your toes.

JanH · 11/05/2006 21:06

I just checked the 18866 website and their connection charge has gone up to 5p, MrsR - 1899 is 3p and 18185 is 4p atm - worth changing!

MrsRecycle · 12/05/2006 08:53

Thanks JanH - I had a look and it looks like we're going to switch to 1899 for UK calls and 18185 for Australia and Netherlands. Good job I used your suggestion of programming the numbers in the phone - all I have to do is sign up and amend the numbers. Off to sign-up now.

MrsRecycle · 12/05/2006 09:02

Oh no - I tried to register with 1899 and got this message:
"Due to lack of capacity it is currently not possible to register. Please wait at least 6 weeks before attempting to register again. Our apologies for the inconvenience."

Off to try 18185 now.

MrsRecycle · 12/05/2006 09:17

Success - 18185 worked so all signed up. It's just so quick. Thanks JanH - you should set-up your own website (ufoneswitch??)! Smile
