My 7 year old dd is devouring these at lightening speed. At first I thought they were quite unpleasant. Now I know they are but have to admit they're brilliantly written.

Is anyone else's dd or ds reading them?

I know there's not really an 'e' in books btw. Blush

DSs (5 and 7) are having them as their bedtime story :)

spidermama · 11/05/2006 17:54

They're good to read aren't they? I love stories which are well written (Room on the Broom springs to mind) because they're lovely to read out.

ds liked the first but has not been hooked enough to ask for more immediately.
He says he preferred Artemis Fowl!
They are very good, I agree.

Jacqueline Wilson has just published a £1 guide to really great read aloud books for younger and older children.
We love reading aloud too. Even stiff old creaky tomes like Jennings Goes to School provide lots of fun.

I have delegated Bedtime Story to DH, SMama, so I don't get to read them. Love Room on the Broom though.

I enjoyed the first couple, but after a while they're a bit samey. DS1 has read the first one, but claims not to like it - which really surprises me as I'd have thought it would be right up his street.

Yorkiegirl · 11/05/2006 18:18

They are very samey, and if hooked the kids I teach read and read until they have read all of them. I hate having to say not to read a book, but I wish they would read another book in between or something! Always reading the same type of book drives me nuts!
But in the bigger picture it is better that kids read so if Lemony Snicket does it for her, let her read them!

singersgirl · 11/05/2006 18:19

DS1 (7) has read them all. There's been a bit of competitive Lemony Snicket reading in his class, which certainly upped his speed. I enjoyed them, though agree they get a bit samey, but there are lots of jokes in there that I laughed at which were rather over DS1's head. I particularly like the dedications to Beatrice - "dearest, darling, dead".

spidermama · 11/05/2006 20:21

I know what you mean Yorkiegirl. I'm really struggling with the Big Friendly Giant. Every second word is made up and I'm finding it irritating beyond belief. I started it months ago and keep hopeing they won't remember.

You may be right about the competative reading thing singer'. My dd has mentioned that certain friends are reading them. I think she's just lost in the Baudelaire world though.

My dd read these several times over and I am looking forward to getting her the last one. But she is the legendary book worm and will happily read her sisters reception reading books whilst keeping a terry pratchett under her pillow. She loves the humor of the books.

NotAnOtter · 11/05/2006 20:47

mine have all read them - better than hp i am told and less arduous!

Frenchgirl · 11/05/2006 20:54

dd (6 and a half) loves them, she gets them as a reward for 10 cello practices, she's on number 6 or 7 at the moment Grin

She reads them herself so glad to hear you all think they're very good Blush

dh reading her the Thief Lord as bedtime story at the moment (which they both love0
I get to read her french classics Smile

clerkKent · 12/05/2006 13:23

DS read them all. DD(then 7, now 8) and I started going through them as bedtime stories but she got bored in the middle of one about schools and we have never gone back to them.

We also have audio tapes of one or two, which were excellent for long journeys from London to North Wales.

hewlettsdaughter · 12/05/2006 13:29

DS (6) devoured these too. He is waiting for the new one to come out now. I'm like you, spidermama - I wasn't sure about them at first - I also thought they might be a bit old for ds - but he was enthusiastic so I went with it.

serenity · 12/05/2006 13:33

DH(37) has read them all

Tinker · 12/05/2006 13:35

Yes, my 9 years old is into them. I like them because they look pretty on the bookcase Grin
