I only know how to removed them from dogs Shock i am pretty sure it is not the same treatment!

spidermama · 09/05/2006 18:32

Tweezers? The trouble is you have to sneak up on them otherwise they dig in.

How horrible. Where did you get them from? Where are they stuck?

lucy5 · 09/05/2006 18:34

I have a vague memory of vodka and tweezers!

purpleturtle · 09/05/2006 18:34

Oh. My only advice was to smother them in vaseline, because they're supposed to drop out when they die.

juice · 09/05/2006 18:36

she got one on her collar bone and one behind her knee

so juice you drink the vodka to give you the determinbation to use the tweezers on the poor soulShock

Miaou · 09/05/2006 18:37

no, don't use vaseline - the idea is it suffocates them so they drop off but before they do so they regurgitate their stomach contents into the bite, thereby causing an infection (bleurgh)

Tweezers followed by a dab of germaline is the only reliable way I have found of doing it. Check very carefully that you have removed all the mouth parts though (bit tricky if it's really small)

busybusybee · 09/05/2006 18:39

What ever you do dont pull them out as they leave their jaws in - It causes infection I think

I THINK you are supposed to use some sort of alcohol stuff - CAnt remember what its called though

Chloe55 · 09/05/2006 18:42

I'd soak them in vodka (makes them drowsy and loosens the teeth, leave for a couple of mins then pull gently, using tweezers, making sure to remove all mouth parts.

juice · 09/05/2006 18:43

i got them out with tweezers

Well done! Smear the area in germaline or TCP to prevent infection now Smile

If you find an attached tick, you can either smother it with motor oil (used is best, that "gunk" in it seems to suffocate the little critters faster).... OR you can scrape the tick out with a fingernail going front end towards the back end on the tick. That being said, I've had tick bites itch for days on end, only to make that one "lucky scratch", and have a tiny ball about 1 mm in width pop out of the bite (the offending tick's head)... and suddenly all the itching is gone

hasbean · 09/05/2006 19:05

Don't use used motor oil it is carconagenic. Both my dd's have had ticks the hospital recommended covering them in butter / vasaline and leaving them 24 hours to suffocate then pulling them out. This was in the middle of summer and the byutter melted within minutes of application.
I read on another web site (for walkers) that it is always best to remove them within 1 hour to help prevent the small risk of lymes diease. It is very rare but can be carried in ticks that have been on sheep. You should keep the offending tick in a box for a few weeks incase your dd shows any side effects to it - swelling rashes flu like symptoms. I must stress it is very rare and unlikely but people have been infected. I have had ticks on me 3 times and my daughters once. If you are out around long grass, bracken sheep etc try to keep your skin covered (but the little blighters still find a way in )

robinpud · 09/05/2006 19:26

We normally just twist and they pop out.. having said that you have to twist in the right direction. you'll now if you've got it it just pops out, if it doesn't twist theother way.

lou33 · 09/05/2006 19:48

nhs direct dont know what it is

initially they said it could be inflamed tendons, but it is the part under my feet that is painful

she said she will refer it to an out of hours service, and hope that by saying i am a single mum unable to weight bear with a disabled child, they will bend the rules about doing a home visit, but she couldnt promise

couldnt even say when they would call me

lou33 · 09/05/2006 19:49

oops sorry it went to the wrong thread!

no idea how Blush

waterfalls · 09/05/2006 19:51

lol

satine · 09/05/2006 19:59

Vets often sell special tweezer type devices that clamp the ticks allowing you to twist them out easily without breaking the head off. If she gets loads, it might be worth investing (I think they're about £6. They work brilliantly on my dog's ticks!
By the way, I find there are always lots of ticks in fields or grass where sheep have recently grazed.

bramblina · 09/05/2006 20:05

Douse them in surgical spirit (hold cotton wool soaked on) and leave them an hour or two. Then pull with tweezers, while twisting.
