{my other thread seems mysteriously to have disappeared!]

We're hoping now to relocate to the Cotswolds, with dh commuting to work. Having checked out a few places, we're keen on Chippy- love its character/theatre/lido (gosh, even Mr Cameron as a local Wink ). But worried about all the traffic tearing through it though and whether it's ok kid-wise in this regard.

We're also looking at Charlbury being smaller but still near to Chippy's facilities. It looks pricier though.
Anyone know either at all? Any tips? TIA

Hi, MissC - knew this would be your thread!

Jeremy Clarkson lives there. Does that put you off at all? (esp re traffic tearing through!)

Chippy does have a lovely outdoor swimming pool - \link{http://www.chippylido.co.uk/\Chippy Lido} - Dave opened it this year, but Jezza opened it last year and famously drove a Bentley (? or a Roller) into it for Top Gear.

MissChief · 06/05/2006 10:55

hi jan - remember you from oher thread, Smile.

Yes, clarkson's presence a bit of a downer, still nowhere's perfect Grin

do you know it well?

Only by research I'm afraid (and have just noticed that you mentioned the lido in your OP, didn't read it properly, sorry!)

You have probably also found \link{http://www.chippingnorton.net/\the local website} with downloadable town guide?

I know somebody who lives in Hook Norton which is quite close, I could ask them if you like? (Have just looked at map and discovered it's also near Adlestrop, which is an excellent reason to move there!)

MissChief · 06/05/2006 11:33

thanks, would be great if you mentioned it to yr friend. must plead ignorance re adlestrop-nice town/local landmark? yes, i've found the websie-it's a good one, isn't it? tons of info, loads of stuff by locals..

Will email Hooky people!

JanH · 06/05/2006 12:02

Oh, what age are your kids, and would you want state or private school inf or both? (Assuming they have any!)

MissChief · 06/05/2006 12:06

we'd want state. We've got 1 school age (infants) and 1 baby and we're looking for long-term move so right thro to A-level ideally!
Love the poem - feel ignorant now, so much for vaguely being a local (same county anyway) &A-level enlgihs lit Blush

OP posts:
JanH · 06/05/2006 12:41

I did have it at school, but I was there a lot longer ago than you Grin - it's a very 50s sort of poem I think!

(Rhyming mistier with Gloucestershire a bit dodgy though.)

MissChief · 06/05/2006 14:28

my teacher was more into Eliot, Larkin & the "Irish" poets such as Heaney..He rarely approved of any female poets/writers either - claimed the Brontes and Austen were overly sentimental and not worthy of being classics (maybe that's why I still like Pride & Prejudice so much?)!

Anyway, wonder what accent would have got that to rhyme, not a Glos one anyway! Are you from Glos originally then?

WWWontSlagOffAnyone · 06/05/2006 14:30

Isn't that lovely hotel there? So you've decided on the Cotswolds then MissChief? Lovely scenery, some fab hotels, near enough to London/big cities, enjoy!

WWWontSlagOffAnyone · 06/05/2006 14:32

My mum's from Nailsworth, which is a sweet village/town (not sure what it is, v small anyway) in Glos, it's a lovely area MissChief. I don't know that bit specifically though, will have to look at a map to see where it is.

MissChief · 06/05/2006 14:35

hi www! Yes, me again on a "what's this place like?" kind of a thread, what a surprise, hey Grin hope your move is going/went well...

Nailsworth is further, I think. We're going to have to draw the line somewehre due to dh's commute so will stick to Oxon cots, no further west than Chipping Norton, I think.

Our move was ok MissChief, I'm done with those threads! Where is Chipping N near then? I can't get onto the site Janh linked to because I'm on crappy dial up and it'll take all afternoon and crash the machine!

Oh, ok, very nice!

JanH · 06/05/2006 18:45

Reply for you already, MissC!

"Well - it's all very beautiful around here and has a lovely rural feel to everything.

Your friend might like to also put Hook Norton into the equation. People do commute to London from here.

Chipping Norton is a market town and there is a good variety of properties around and a choice of primary schools although I don't really know much about them. Supermarkets, chemist, newsagents etc., some interesting shops and a great leisure centre as well (for my early morning Monday swim!) Also a very good theatre.

Charlbury is larger than Hook Norton but has a railway station with a direct line to London and a good primary school. Yes it is more expensive - rather a lot of Oxford academics live there. Once again there's a good variety of properties.

Hook Norton - well what can I say - we've been here 26 years and have no intention of leaving! It's quite a bit smaller than Charlbury so there won't be the choice of properties but if something came up in their price range I'm sure it would be wonderful. In that price range it would be an older property or barn conversion. The primary school is good and there are good local amenities for a village including doctors, village shop, post office, dentist, hairdresser, library and film society to name but a few. Lots of groups and activities for young families. M40 is 10 miles away at Banbury and Chipping Norton is 5 miles in the other direction. Charlbury is about 5 miles from Chipping Norton and would be closer to the motorway. The nice thing about Hook Norton is that it leads to nowhere and therefore there's really no through traffice. Charlbury does have a main road but doesn't seem to create a problem - there's still a nice rural feel to it with lots of things going on. From Charlbury there's a good Waitrose at Witney for the
weekly shop.

The catchment area for secondary school for all three is the comprehensive in Chipping Norton which has a good reputation and a 6th form.

Both our boys went to the Primary School at Hooky (local name) and then on to the Comprehensive at Chippy (also local name) and are well established in good careers.

Everywhere around is really lovely and I'm sure your friends would be happy wherever they move. I think they just need to explore to find what suits them. I would say that Charlbury and Hooky would offer village life whereas Chippy would be more the circle of friends you make and is a delightfuly market town. All are on the doorstep to the Cotswolds which is so beautiful - we do a lot of walking there.

There's also Bloxham which is closer to Banbury. It does have a main road running through it which I think splits the large village but has some lovely properties, a good Primary School and the seconday school The Warriner which doesn't have a 6th form so students move on to Banbury for that. A few shops - the usual village store, post office etc.

I do my weekly shop in Banbury - choice of the usual Supermarkets.

Hope this helps.

Am happy to give any further information at any time - it's actually quite nice to talk about the lovely area in which we live."

Hooky Primary is CofE I've discovered, don't know if that would bother you.

JanH · 06/05/2006 18:47

NB I described you as a friend rather than a pretend/internet friend in case she thinks I'm weird! Grin

lexiemum · 06/05/2006 20:20

was in Hook Norton on friday for the first time - it is absolutely gorgeous and I'd move there. Also, they actually have a dentist that takes nhs! - the purpose of my 20mile round trip from Banbury.

chippy road is always busy but on the evesham/burford side there are some nice houses and away from the A44. Oh and my fav house, if only I could afford it is on the A44, a mile or so outside chippy towards evesham (it may well be in your price range though) - new build with loads of rooms, only downside is that it sits directly to side of A44 and probably why it hasn't sold in 3yrs!

tinkerbellchelle · 06/05/2006 21:01

mischief > I used to live in a little village called leafield nr charlbury. My doctors was in charlbury. I now live in hanborough which is a bit closer to oxford etc.

If there is any questions you would like me to try and answer I will try my best :)

ThePrisoner · 06/05/2006 21:46

The advantage of Hook Norton is that it isn't a village that you drive through to get anywhere else. And it's got lots of pubs. And a brewery!!

MissChief · 07/05/2006 08:58

hook norton sounds good! Anything facility-wise besides the pubs?! Would ideally like a couple of shops, cafe, playgrd, school within waking distance..
