Okay, this is a very minor whinge in the scheme of things BUT...

... this morning had a major palaver because the milkman didn't deliver any milk this morning. Dh had to go out and get some so ds could have his breakfast which caused a serious meltdown on ds' part and we weren't far off. Not a good start to the morning.

Phoned the dairy but they weren't very helpful and just said we wouldn't be charged.

I've just been out to take ds to nursery and found our bill half way down the footpath - which means the milk WAS delivered but someone took it.

In God's name WHY ... it's not like milk is that expensive. I know it was only a small value that was stolen but it caused absolute HAVOCK this morning. Bastards.

GRRR ARGH

Have some cake, you'll feel much better

Someone ran over our dustbin lid last week and I felt as cross as you do now. Over a dustbin lid!

GeorginaA · 21/01/2004 12:53

AND I have no cake!!! fumes

No one stole my cake though

Dh thinks it's a bit extreme to hook up CCTV over the doorstep... men!

ugh ... okay, yes I was lucky in that case! At least we didn't have a clearup job as well this morning! You're right though, it's not the monetary value, it's the aggro factor (especially with a toddler who LOVES his breakfast!).

It's going to be a right pain though if we can't rely on milk staying there. Tempted to get one of those lockable boxes (we're with Express Dairies) but can't find anywhere on the net which lists the price to see if it would be worth it just for a bit of petty pilfering. I suspect they only hold 2 pints as well, and as we don't get a delivery every day we'd still get some out of the locked box anyway.

Gits.

Maybe I should leave a bottle out there tomorrow spiked with a diuretic...

Infuriating! Just a throught, but do you think you should 'phone the dairy back so the milkman doesn't get an earful?

bundle · 21/01/2004 13:19

GeorginaA, how very very annoying
someone stole two nice blue painted terracotta planters from our front 'garden' - they were v heavy, full of soil & old knackered plants that needed replenishing. they must have had a car with them & planned it because ours is no-through road, so they couldn't have just been passing. fume too!

GeorginaA · 21/01/2004 13:24

Carla: was going to write the milkman a letter to go with the cheque for the bill next collection of empties. I don't think he'll get an earful - the dairy hardly sounded bothered to be honest.

Will ask if they do locked boxes in the letter and find out if they're worth it.

bundle: now that is aggravating - those planters don't come cheap either! At least I can pretty much assume mine was an opportunist (we're by the main footpath to the community centre & supermarket).

At least you can get milk delivered at a reasonable hour in your neighborhood. I spook with our local milkman and he said he wouldn't be able to get milk to me before 11am! Lots of good that would do to two working parents. Especially in the summer.

Stargazer · 21/01/2004 21:29

I gave up on milk being delivered last summer. I was assured when I tried the dairy, that the milk would be delivered before 7.30am (as I leave the house then) and I wanted it in before it got hot. They managed it once out of 14 tries. I didn't pay for the milk and cancelled the order. Now I get mine from the supermarket - it's cold, fresh and I can get it in the fridge without it spoiling.

Update

Well we got milk this morning. Had a lovely note from our milkman saying we wouldn't be charged for the two pints and that the police had been called (?! bit overkill I think for 2 pints of milk - bet they were thrilled with that )

He suspects a couple of teenagers that were hanging around while he delivered and it seems that this is a pattern that's been happening around where I live. He's leaving them hidden behind the car/in front of the garage from now on so they can't be seen from the path.

What a nice milkman

Found this thread a bit late, but we had our milk stolen several times & had the police involved! Turned out a local builder's van was driving down our road early every morning & decided to save the tea money by lifting milk off the doorsteps. What made us really angry was that they took both pints, so the children got no breakfast.

When the dairy accused us of reporting it stolen so that we didn't have to pay (!!!) we stopped having it delivered. It is cheaper from the supermarket anyway.

GeorginaA · 27/01/2004 22:32

Yes, the breakfast bit is the most frustrating part of it - one pint would have been annoying - both pints really ruins your day.

I know we probably should buy from the supermarket (Tescos is about 5 mins walk away!!) but our fridge is so tiny that to be practical we'd be there every other day and then my grocery budget would be blown as I'd get numerous other bits while I was in there!

I try and kid myself it's because it's more environmentally friendly recycling the glass bottles and everything, but I'd only be fibbing to myself... basically I'm just lazy

Have you got a freezer that you could could freeze milk in Georgina? The fat does tend to separate from the rest when it defrosts, but you can give it a good shake before opening it and its fine again.

Your milkman sounds awfully sweet

Kayleigh · 28/01/2004 10:11

I always try and keep some long life milk in the cupboard for emergencies. Such as those times when I forget to put a post it note in the car to remind me i need to buy milk on the way home from work

GeorginaA · 28/01/2004 11:46

hmc - I do but it's in the garage - understandably I don't like going out there that much (there's not an internal connecting door!)

Besides, as you say, our milkman is nice I like to think of it as supporting a local business

We get one pint a day - supporting local business and all that - but it is sooo expensive. Would still get more even so but fitting all those bottles in a little fridge is impossible, and in the summer it gets forgotten on the doorstep and ends up going down the sink because it's too cheesy.

Generally get the 2-pint supermarket bottles as they fit well laid down before they're opened (not after, they leak) and there isn't too much wasted space in the door when they're half empty, like with 4-pint bottles. (I used to have an enormous fridge and really miss it!)

adamadamum · 19/12/2006 23:49

What a coincidence that today I have just joined mumsnet and find a thread about milkmen. Today I have stopped using mine! I am furious with him and will now get the milk in with my Tesco.com deliveries, and freeze some. Basically, no milk was delivered yesterday or this morning, and I was almost completely out of UHT which I keep as a standby - My 2 1/2 yr old boy is a complete calcium kid and would go crazy without enough milk. I phoned the dairy this morning and they said they had no idea what had happened, and would get some sent out to us. Mid afternoon, still no milk, I call them again to be told my milkman was not going to be delivering milk to me again until I paid my "debt" to him - I had mislaid my milk tokens, which I had told him, and promised to search for them - I had in fact put them out with the empties for him this morning! He and the dairy had given me no prior warning to this, not a note from the milkman, nothing. Not even an opportunity to give him cash - he just stopped delivering! I had used express dairies for about 2 years, the milkman knew me well, knows I am on my own with a milk guzzling toddler and a disabled daughter, and without warning he just stopped delivering. No doubt he expects me to continue when he gets these tokens, but I am going to leave a complaining letter outside with the tokens letting him know he has lost my custom. I regularly got extra items from him and he must have made quite a bit of money from my custom. I am still livid now at 11.45pm!
