What a programme. Did any of you watch it?
Did anyone just wonder what the hell was going on in Jayne's brain? What kind of a mother/wife ignores everyone elses wishes to put all their lives in danger so she could live in her fantasy world? AND, what about sleeping with the locals and broadcasting this to the television crew in front of her husband???
I felt so sorry for her husband and burst into tears at the end when they said he had died 4 weeks later of a massive asthma attack, what a bloody miserable last year of your life.
Have yet to find anyone else who watched it though ...!

Janus, I didnt watch it as Id read an article about it, and knew it would wind me up!

Poor man and poor children.

And, apparently now the real father of the children has discovered what had happened to his children, he didnt know where they were.

Pupuce · 17/01/2002 14:53

I actually wondered what had happened to the (biological) father of the kids... but what a story.. talk about an ending to the programme !
I wonder what will happen to the 4 of them !
But it seemed very dangerous for kids to be brought up on this island...

Viv · 17/01/2002 14:53

I didn't see the programme sadly but as I live not far from their UK home (before they sold it to buy the island) our local paper has been full of it. I'm with you it seems unbelieveable.
All her old friends seen to say in her defense are that she has always been different and once she has made her mind up she doesn't change it!
I guess none of really knows what really goes on but you can't help wondering?

Janus · 17/01/2002 15:00

I missed the beginning of the programme so didn't realise he wasn't their biological father, so hope one day he comes and rescues the poor things. Thanks for telling me.

yes, watched it and, was completely sickened by her attitude. But who knows the real story, documentary teams have a clever way of editing stuff. I want to hear her side of the story. Where are they now? Still on the island? I was really sad after hearing about that man dying - totally unexpected considering what he had been through already. It was a real antidote to the programme the week before when a family went to Spain and found complete paradise. I really enjoy this series as have often vaguely thought about moving somewhere really remote where our kids could run free, eat healthy homegrown veg, ride bareback across the countryside, but who am I kidding. I know I'd probably find it difficult to exist without company of others, buses, swimming lessons, playgroups, even wackywarehouses. Has anyone else thought about getting away from it all or anyone done it?

EmmaM · 18/01/2002 09:08

I watched it too. I was just stunned at the end of it. I feel so awful for those children. I even looked up the contact details of the British Embassy in Nicaragua because I thought someone should go and get those poor kids (but haven't done anything else about it). She came across so vain and selfish. I just can't help feeling those kids should be tucked up in proper beds, enjoying school and making the most of their childhood. The reviewer in the paper summed up as hoping the children didn't hate their mother for good for what she put them through.

I'd like to know what has happened to them and to know that they are safe and happy.

The minute my husband saw "Theodore" he said, "No prizes for guessing who hired him". Everything that then transpired seemed to do so as a direct result of Jayne shagging the staff. If she hadn't annoyed Theodore he wouldn't have rallied the locals to attempt to reclaim the island, they wouldn't have been kidnapped, her poor husband wouldn't have become so dreadfully ill or died. This might sound simplistic, but that woman is mad. Those poor children - they have made it clear they would like to be anywhere but that island - not surprising really after being kidnapped and their step-dad dying (although they referred to him as dad so obviously had very strong relationship with him) - yet she has taken them back there. Incredible. Can kids that far away be made wards of court? They are British citizens I presume, so will be interesting to see what their real father does, if indeed he does anything. She should be certified. Evil and selfish beyond belief.

Pupuce · 18/01/2002 12:32

I agree with everything that has been said but this was a TV programme and the producers weren't on the island everyday and were able to edit as they liked. I am not saying that it wasn't how it happened but we need to be a BIT cautious when we judge people on tele.

Did anyone watch this last night??
I thought they came across as a really lovely couple and the children too.

Tinker · 24/01/2002 13:09

Yes, I agree. The papers were a little sneery about their lack of ability to speak French but I thought the guy, in particular, made a really good go of things. Just wish I knew a builder who wanted to do it.

After the other week it was refreshing to watch a family where everything turned out OK. He was such a hard worker, he deserved to succeed. I thought it was great too that the girls got on with their school and within 12 weeks had got to grips with the language and made friends. It seemed to me they had done their homework, had got a contingency plan for when they needed more cash, and done the right thing by immediately being friendly the locals and making efforts to integrate into the community.

I feel so envious of their lifestyle now. It really does make you question the quality of life we have here in the UK.

Good for them. I hope they continue to go well.

helenmc · 25/01/2002 12:59

I though last night's was brilliant - what a lovely family and fantastic home and you just wanted it all to work for them.

helenmc · 15/01/2003 17:30

don't forget to watch tonights

Nutjob · 15/01/2003 22:19

Did anyone watch tonights episode? I just sat there with my mouth hanging open for most of it - unbelievable!! What about the sewage?! - Yeuuchh.
And I thought it was just hilarious that at the beginning of the programme she was going on about how lovely and genuine the people were and by the end they were slagging them off left, right and centre.

I just couldn't believe that someone would buy a property without getting a structural survey done, and that after the previous owner refused to give a written guarantee that the heating and pool filter were in working order that they still went ahead with it!!

I know hindsight is a wonderful thing, but good grief - no structural survey even though they could see a few things needed doing!!!!

miggy · 15/01/2003 22:45

hi, all first posting here, have lurked a bit and see you are all friendly(ISH!!) much nicer than lots of other boards.
just a quick defence of this couple-I agree they were stupid in lots of ways but in France its not the done thing to have a survey- they dont even have surveyors. We are in the middle of completing on a holiday home there (much less money and no pool to go wrong!) but now I'm terrified the heating system will explode!

jasper · 15/01/2003 22:50

HI Miggy, wellcome.
yes we are friendly indeed and much nicer than most other boards, and also highly intelligent compared with the rest

jasper · 15/01/2003 22:50

Darn I missed it tonight. Could someone summarise what it was about?
Thanks
