we have a housing association house with 4 occupants next door and have been told its half way housing.....what does that mean and what sort of people live there?

the sort i wouldn't want to live next to, tbh.

rickman · 03/05/2006 11:57

Probably a temporary home until permanent accommodation can be found.

bambi06 · 03/05/2006 11:57

hmmm exactly my thought but what sort of things have they been up to , to get housed here? obviously having young children i`m more concerned especially as more have moved in recently

would the housing assoc tell me what sort of housing it involves or is it data protection etc?

Half-way from institutional living to independant living.

That could mean anything from ex-prisoners to people with disablities with a massive variety inbetween.

expatinscotland · 03/05/2006 11:59

I thought it was for ex-prisoners waiting to be rehoused permanently.

Marina · 03/05/2006 12:00

It might mean any of the following, I'd have thought:

  • people moving out of residential care (adults with learning difficulties, recovering psychiatric patients) and on their way to independent living
  • teenagers who have been in residential care, getting used to the idea of independent living
  • former prisoners being rehabilitated post-release

HTH, I have no experience of this other than to say that the best supervised and supported teenagers in our suburban street (three houses down) were the ones living in halfway accommodation, and they were never a moment's trouble. Provided your neighbours are getting appropriate support for their situations hopefully you will find the same.

Are they approachable bambi? Have you met them? I think the best way to find out more about their circumstances is to try talking to them, the council or housing association is unlikely to tell you much, unless you are unfortunate enough to have a specific complaint.

bambi06 · 03/05/2006 12:07

lets hope...i do know that one of them has some form of ocd and has been there now 4 years and is very quiet and generally looks after the property but theres another two moved in , one a young woman whos very loud and plays music constantly and im not sure whether she has a friend living there too whose got a kid[3yrs old approx] who`s there everyday and to late at night too and the kid never sets foot outside and is cooped up in one room constantly with music being played and they always shout at her to be quiet but not in such nice wordsWink plus theres a guy moved in who doesnt seem to work but drives a brand new toyota..wears designer clothes and is alway bringing clothes back from the drycleanersShock so how come he has al this money and no job but has housing provided for him..hmmm!!!!

Perhaps i was a little generous with my definition! Who told you it was half way housing though?

charliecat · 03/05/2006 13:05

is toyota man maybe a care worker?

nailpolish · 03/05/2006 13:12

my mum works with this sort of thing (shes admin tho)

i think it means people who have been in prison, who are released and have to learn how to care for themselves

sometimes its quite sad, there are people who dont even know how to pay a bill, open a bank account, shop for food etc

sometimes they have care workers who try and show them how to live a normal life, help them get a job, learn social skill you and i take for granted

its quite sad at times, especially young people who dont have any family or friends they can turn to, their parents are criminals and its the only way of life they know. the people i have met at my mums work have been very friendly, very keen to learn cooking, social activities, relationships, driving, computer skills, etc

they have just had a bad start in life and it can be a big step for them

bambi06 · 03/05/2006 13:12

no he is the father of the woman with the child as he has a car seat in his car and ive seen them together and hes been out and brought child items

we were told by the previous owners when we moved in and he should know as he works in social housing!! plus the gentle guy with ocd has told us its a house for sick people...
i know i sound very judgmental which is not normally me and until the others started moving in i was o.k about it but now my kids are getting older and can repeat words heard from next doorAngry i`m not so keen on having problems on my doorstep.

nailpolish · 03/05/2006 13:16

there is nothing wrong with not wanting these things on your doorstep bambi, most people if they are honest agree with this sort of thing but dont want it right next door to them
