What do you do with baby when toddler wants to play in the garden?

I've thought about using the travel cot, but that's a real faff to put up and down and I don't want it sitting on outr waterlogged grass. DD is most unimpressed if she's stuck in the buggy and not moving. I can't see ds in the garden from inside so I have to be out with him. Now the weather's improving I'd like the pair of them to be outside as often as possible, but the logistics are flummoxing me.

What does everyone else do?

How old? Washing basket? Tie things on it,yes I admit I did it!

mcmudda · 02/05/2006 07:39

Yeah that crossed my mind too, but our garden is at the bottom of a hill so very waterlogged. Ds usually has to play football in his wellies!

Is there such a thing as an outdoor playpen, like the ones they have at swimming pools?

Waterproof sheet to go under picnic blanket? We've got some which we use for camping. You could put a babydan round her with or without the padded mat. Shell shaped sandpit, or would she escape too quickly?

Tortington · 02/05/2006 08:10

id stick him in one of those walking things on wheels.

or put up the travel cot

buy a play pen

put the double quilt outside

buy a huge tarpaulin

get one of those beach tent thingies and stick some balls in it along with the kid

ghosty · 02/05/2006 08:10

Put her in old clothes and let her get muddy ... babies are washable and so are clothes.

tracyk · 02/05/2006 08:14

What about a backpack/papoose?

tracyk · 02/05/2006 08:14

or could you get a lorry load of play bark that would soak up the mud/water?

PanicPants · 02/05/2006 08:18

mcmudda I was wondering the same last night, and I'll bump the thread for you so you can see what everyone said.

Sorry hopeless at links.

mcmudda · 02/05/2006 08:19

Thanks everyone! Will investigate tarpaulin type things or convince dh on the merits of a decent playpen!

Tracyk - I wish our drainage problem was able to be solved by bark - we're thinking more on the lines of hiring a JCB and digging drainage channels.

Now that's something ds would love to play in...

or a paddling pool - an empty one, then fill it up with water when it hotter

PanicPants · 02/05/2006 08:21

Ok mcmudda have done it for you.

The consensus was a high sided paddling pool.

BettySpaghetti · 02/05/2006 08:26

We got a lot of mileage out of a swing last summer -it was a double one so we put one the baby/toddler ELC seats on one side for DS. He would quite happily be in there for a while whilst his sister played and I ocasionally pushed him. Also the sandpit was very popular -he would sit and mave spades araound for ages.

BettySpaghetti · 02/05/2006 08:27

oops -"wave" spades around that should read

Tortington · 02/05/2006 08:35

bettys post reminded me - you can get those swings that hang from door frames can't you? those bouncy things

Tommy · 02/05/2006 08:46

was going to suggest paddling pool too Smile

hoxtonchick · 02/05/2006 09:12

i just let dd crawl around & get very messy. balls popular too.

eidsvold · 02/05/2006 14:52

put down picnic blanket or in her rocker on the patio area, or in the sun tent for a sleep. now dd2 isolder - crawling around checking out the garden.
