MSN. Safe for a 10 year old to use?

I'm not really sure how safe MSN is for children. DD1 (10) wants to use it as "all her friends do". Bearing in mind that she'll be using the computer in a family room, and not in her bedroom, do you feel this would be safe? I'll be around, but obviously not looking over her shoulder the whole time. I think what worries me is getting unsolicited messages - does this happen? Would appreciate any info thanks. x

my 10 year old uses it. we have the rule that he does not 'add' anyone without asking me first.

So am I right in thinking that no one can contact you unless you put them on your list? (thanks for your comments all)

kama, yes i can see that. My 10 year old woudlnt do that so I do not worry. he is far too much of a worrier

DS (5) uses MSN messenger if that is what you are talking about.

When DP is away they can chat and see each other on the webcam before DS goes to bed for the night.

He only has grandparents, a few cousins and a few family friends who don't mind chatting to him.

He has not yet added anyone as he doesn't know any addresses, I will have to worry about that when he gets older (-:

dd is 14 and is always on msn with one or other of her mates. dh has installed a "filter" which prohibits certain websites when she's on the net and does not allow her to add any contacts to her msn address list without our prior consent. There is also a facility to save her conversations so if we ever felt there was anything untoward, we could read them.

It's always a good idea to have some safeguards in place imo.

ds is 14 and always on msn(unless I kick him of the computor) i have read him the riot act about sending photos and stuff. As the computor is in the lounge I just keep an eye on him
watch out for bebo though if she goes on that it is very popular but can be used by bullies.

DS1 is 12 and has a computer in his room so goes on MSN there. We told him that by using it in his room he was agreeing to us reading any of his conversations any time we wanted. He has also been told that we may at any time check to see which internet sites he has accessed. I don't want to invade his privacy, but the bottom line is he's a kid and we need to protect him from himself and others!
