Is 10 miles too far for an 11-year old to cycle?

We're going cycling in the New Forest tomorrow and we're trying to plan a route. My stepdaughter is coming with us and I want to work out how far we should go. We're planning on cycling for five miles, having a rest and picnic and then returning. The route doesn't involve any hills. Does this sound too far for an 11-year old? She's a bit of a couch potato, so propbably not that fit and she does moan like hell if we make her walk anywhere, but she is up for this. I don't want the day to turn into a moanathon, so would appreciate advice.

No, that won't take long on a bike will it..she'll enjoy it

That should be fine. I thought this was going to be someone asking about a 10 mile trip to school every day or something.

I thought it was cycling to school too..

average cycling speed is 6-8miles per hour

Thanks. I know she will start moaning at some point, so it helps to know that I don't have unreasonable expectations.

I used to cycle 6-7 miles (I think) to school at 11 and that was an a bike with only three gears!!

5 miles sounds like a lot - you could always stop for a drink and a breather every 2.5 miles or so. Sounds like a fab trip, hope you all have a lovely day and no moans! Smile
