My cat is a carpet clawing fiend!

Harriet (should she be dc?)is 18 months old, and in my last house (I've had 4 in 18 months) she shredded the corners of two carpets, both of which were a bit old and tatty. She was moved away and shouted at everytime we caught her doing it. Now I have a nice new house and nice new carpets and we cant get her to stop, she has found a littlel corner at the bottom of teh stairs adn is starting to shred it. I now have a pile of videos on it so she cant get at it and she is in a major sulk! Does anyone know of anything that I can do to stop her doing this. Dp suggests locking her in the kitchen , but that feels mean, esp as I would have to put the other cat in with her and they hate one another, and the other doesn't have this habit.
Any ideas?

Lilibet - Why don't you get her a scratching post from the pet shop? You can sprinkle it with Cat nip to attract her to it initially. It'll be much more staifying for her than your carpets.

I do sympathise. Our problem is our house rabbit! He chews the carpets and the walls.

Oops - Meant satisfying!

Might be a bit mean but try putting some pepper on the carpet. It will make her sneeze (obviously!) but she shouldn't try it again! The only danger is that she'll then find another corner and you could end up with pepper all over your house...

Oh dear lilibet. That was my only idea.

Our cat used to do that to the sofa arms and I know how infuriating it is. In the end we had to put her in the kitchen while we were out anyway as we got a rescue dog who wouldn't tolerate her. Couldn't you swap them round, putting Harriet in the kitchen and non-scratchy cat in the carpeted bit?

Assuming the carpet isn't in an area where you walk, try putting down double sided sticky tape. Cats hate the sticky feeling on their paws and won't scratch it. Unfortunately, she might just transfer her habit elsewhere but nothing ventured, nothing gained!
