round here you used to be able to apply for (to buy) radar keys from the local council offices.
they just kept quiet about it.

supakids · 25/04/2006 11:41

They are a shop for disabled folk so I dont think its a scam. Bl@@dy handy though eh Grin

cod · 25/04/2006 11:41

i used mine ( dont normally) when i had chornic diorreha in ma and s marble arch

id steer clear of the diabled loo ont eh third floor if I were you

Socci · 25/04/2006 11:41

why would someone want to buy a key so they can go round unlocking disabled toilets? Unless they were homeless, in which case they'd be unlikely to have an ebay account!

hulababy · 25/04/2006 11:41

Jimjamskeepingoffvaxthreads · 25/04/2006 11:42

Yep the RADAR scheme is for disabled loos. \link{http://www.radar.org.uk/radarwebsite/tabid/41/default.aspx\link here about the scheme}. I think anyone can have a key if they want, most people don't really understand the difficulties they might be causing by using the key when they don't really need to I guess (like disabled parking isn't it).

hulababy · 25/04/2006 11:43

However:

Who can purchase a Radar Key?

The key can be purchased by anybody with a disability. (No proof of disability required).

People would want one I guess so they can access and use locked disabled toilets when out and about.

iPodthereforiPoor · 25/04/2006 11:43

anyone can buy one from the council - my mum has one because she has chrons disease - you do not want to stop someone with that getting to a toilet if they need one! She also has a card asking places withoutr public loos to let her use theirs as she suffers from a bowel disorder.

It's a bit off selling them on ebay though - people who need one but don't know where to get one will be getting ripped off I would imagine.

supakids · 25/04/2006 11:43

when ds was small i used disabled loo to take pram in with me. Its a devil trying to find who the keyholder is before you wet yourself so I can see it could be useful. Check loo is vacant first though eh!

cod · 25/04/2006 11:43

ion our debenhams the toddler changing area is controlled by a radar key ( to stop druggies i suppose)

BUt i use mine wihtout getting theirs and am allways terrified that someone wuill use the shop one and open it upa nd ill be NEKKId

Jimjamskeepingoffvaxthreads · 25/04/2006 11:44

They can sell them legally I think, as they're not selling then VAT free. It sort of relies on people playing fair, which of course many don't.

iPodthereforiPoor · 25/04/2006 11:45

I've got one as well, as there is nowhere I could go with woo in a buggy without leaving the door open - and noone needs to see that!

misdee · 25/04/2006 11:46

i dont want to stop anyone getting to the loo if they need to, but i think selling the keys on ebay is a bit off. here you have to aplly to have one at the mobility shop.

OP posts:
starlover · 25/04/2006 11:47

you can buy them from shops online too that sell items for disabled people

welshboris · 25/04/2006 11:47

why would you be naked cod???

misdee · 25/04/2006 11:48

hmmmmm. so i cant really report it then.

Jimjamskeepingoffvaxthreads · 25/04/2006 11:48

That may be to get them VAT free misdee- I just got one from Fledglings. DS1 is getting to the age when I can;t take him into the ladies, if people are blocking the disabled loos then they'll have to put up with him screaming and headbutting the door when he can't get in, so I guess they'll get out pretty quickly. If they're disabled then its just one of those things, if they're not I'll just cast them dirty looks and think "thanks mate, nice one".

hulababy · 25/04/2006 11:48

I had really assumed that these would be available for disabled people only. Learn something new I guess...

I have used disabled toilets when DD was little - the buggy issue like others have said. But always went and got their keys if necessary.

I did get into trouble and lots of grief for using a disabled toilet (no key required) when DD was a year old. I was so annoyed. Noone was waiting to use it and it was a security bloke fromt he shopping centre. I did explain that if and when they provided toilets that parents can use WITH a pushchair in tow (baby change had no adult toilet) then I would refrain from using it. And also would he like to be responsible if I left my child outside the normal toilets and she went missing.

misdee · 25/04/2006 11:57

So did I hula Blush i am usually so well informed lol.

with dd1 i used the disabled loos at the shopping centre here. to get to the ladies you have to push two very large heavy doors which are too close together and one would close on the buggy whilst opening the other. nowadays they open the disabled loos for buggy users. but the really silly thing is, they have a big baby changing room but no toilet in there [puzzled]

i use the disabled loos with dd2 as she needs supervision on the loo, if i take her into the ladies she wants to lock the door, then gets into mischeif. she also has to wash her hands properly. in most normal loos she cant reach the sink, she can in disabled loos. which means she can wash and soap as much as she needs. i dont explain myself to anyone waiting, as dd2 is 95% more likely to be dx soon with a disability, the facilities make going out with her easier.

Often there seems to be one open and one locked disabled loo. IN that case I'd use the open one with the buggy etc. Buggies\young children are a problem in normal loos.
