hoping for some advice.... been claiming this for over 2 years... due to long standng spinal problem which makes it difficult, impossible for me to work (quite apart from making it impossible to convince an employer that they should employ me. Especially since at mo, am breastfeeding and therefore cannot take my pain medication. I am trying to retrain (did MA last year and start PhD this year) in order to develop a research career.... basically for the flexibility it affords me and spinal problem needs very careful daily management. I was calle today and told that benefits agency require me to undergo a medical. I am concerned as the form i recently filled in re: 'why i cannot work' was largely irrelevant to my condition...altho' i did explain in the spaces provided why it is difficult for me to work..... What do they do at medicals? is there some rule that says they cannot expeect me to work whilst breastfeeding? dd is only 3 months.... do i have any protection ? advice would be great....thanx.

its basically a medical to see if you are fit to work. my dh went to one last jan as he has a heart consition, the bloke who did his medical said he will advise the DWP that he cant work for at least 2years.

Hope this will work as I haven't odne links before...
have a look at \link{http://www.benefitsandwork.co.uk\it is aimed at advice workers and gives very useful, clear info on how to claim capacity benefit. It tells you what to expect at the medical examination and what the decision maekrs are looking for. good luck!

no, link doesn't seem to work, but anyway the site is www.benefitsandwork.co.uk - go to the benefits section and you will find a free downloadable guide to IB

me again. Sorry, I just looked at that site to check and realised their incapacity benefit guide is only for people claiming on mental health grounds, not physical. so not relevant to you. Have you been along to your local citizens advice bureau? they should be able to tell you what to expect, and if you do have any problems with the medical (which hopefully won't be the case)they can help you appeal against the decision
