How do you start? Where do you advertise? How much do you charge? Are there any special things you do? Do you need a car? How much do you earn in a week? Do you need to be very central?

Thanks!

Hi fastasleep!
I used to have my ironing done by a friend, so did my mum. We'd taken our ironing to her, she'd tell me when it was done and I'd pick it up. She did it through word of mouth (claiming dole so didn't want to get caught!)
I'd start with friends / family, build up by word of mouth and then put adverts in local newsagents / shops
Dont think you need to be central, people will make a lot of allowences for somebody to do a job they dont like!!

fastasleep · 22/04/2006 20:39

I think all my friends either madly iron in an ott perfectionist way or wouldn't ever dream of ironing anything - let alone pay for it... hmm... I might have to jump straight into advertising... if it earned more than 150 a week I couls quit the sexlin and do it instead.. or I could team both together... I'm entr.. entre... into making money me!

I swear my typing isn't due to drunkeness Blush I haven't had a drink in ages!

advert in the local newsagents/co-op is a good way to start IMO Smile

Elf1981 · 22/04/2006 20:42

lol
go for the advertising in the local shops to begin with. still do the sex line thing (by the way, I admire that you do this, I'd end up laughing or getting distracted by Enders on the telly!) When you get a list of people who want their ironing done on a weekly basis, stop the sex line job.
Worth checking your local Evening Post to see how much it would be to advertise.

Elf1981 · 22/04/2006 20:43

You could do some fliers as well and post them in a x mile radius to your house so that to begin with you are controlling how far you need to travel / they need to travel. Shouldn't be too expensive to print them off on your own computer and hand deliver.

kickassangel · 22/04/2006 20:44

i get my ironing done for me. i take teh ironing round, and she charges £4 an hour, and gets loads done in that time,(2 weeks clothing costs me about £8 - £10) much better than i cna do. someone else at my work uses a laundry service - they have special vans with hangers, collect & drop off & charge by item. you'll need space to hang a load of stuff - my woman has the equivalnet of 2 double ardrobes & it's usually full of things to be picked up

blondehelen · 22/04/2006 20:50

i used to pay someone £5 an hour. Big basket used to cost about £5-£8. Then we moved and I haven't found anyone yet.Sad If you make yourself reasonably priced I think you will make reasonable amount of cash. Big companies put me off cos you have to be without your clothes for about 4 days and I am not that organised.

Hi fa, what you need is a hands free phone thingy so you can multi-task!

Seriously admiring you though.Smile

wideawake · 22/04/2006 21:33

yeah passionflower she keeps moaning about a headset so she can multitask

bramblina · 22/04/2006 21:37

I wash, dry and iron the bed linen and towels for a holiday cottage. The owner advertised and I replied. She also offered the money which I was happy with so maybe I was lucky without having to ask. She also used to drop off and collect but moved away so now I just collect and drop off to the shed at the house for the lady who cleans the house. No probs as it's close and I can do it when I please, as opposed to committing to a certain time (bear that in mind)
I get £12 for a double bed (Bottom sh, duvet cover & 4 p/c),£6 for a single (2p/c) and £2 per person for towels (they're given a bath sheet and bath towel each but rarely use both, but I get paid by the bookings so I usually score.Smile HTH

My Mum used to do and she just advertised in the local shops and charged by the hour. I think people were wary at first but then after a couple of weeks they saw that my Mum wasn't ripping them off (claiming the ironing too her much longer than it did etc) and she ended up with a few loyal customers. Two collected and one was happy to wait until my Dad was available (my Mum doesn't drive) and he dropped her ironing off.

fairyjay · 22/04/2006 21:47

A man in a white van collects my ironing at quarter to eight every Tuesday and returns it at 3.30 on the Wednesday.

It's worked in as part of our overall routine.

Quite expensive though - something like £3.45 a kg.

Don't send knickers, pj's etc.,. but he does moan if it's mainly shirts, and said he charges 95 p per shirt (I'd do it myself for that!!)

busybusybee · 22/04/2006 21:55

Im interested in doing this too
I couldnt be bothered to do more than about 3 hours a week though.

And I couldnt be bothered to do it for more than £5 an hour either - Picky thats me!!!

Passionflower · 22/04/2006 21:58

wideawake, I'm assuming you are fa's DH?

fastasleep · 23/04/2006 09:12

I could do this, if I invented some hanging space (easy enough) but but we have no car.. would that just make it impossible?

wideawake is just some random man, I have no clue who he is.. hmm.. Wink

OP posts:
Passionflower · 23/04/2006 21:43

I reckon you could still do ironing without a car. If DH'd let me and I didn't have to fight mum to stop doing ours I'd happily pay someone and deliver/collect it myself.

Passionflower · 23/04/2006 21:44

on second thoughts you could get wideawake to do deliveries by shopper style bicycle. Grin

fastasleep · 23/04/2006 21:45

I don't know if DH will let me take it on!

I'm meant to be working now but DS is screamy
