so where would you move - the house of your dreams, the practical place or the compromise?

Okay, we're still floundering on the moving front and if anyone's prepared to indulge me by reading about our relocation angst, please let me know which of the following 3 options you'd go for. MN jury needed, might provide some kind of steer to our decision-making!

Option 1) village around the town in which we currently live (practical option)
PROs - able to keep in touch with friends, maintain links,
be close to dh's work
CONs - no amazing villages nr where we live
plane noise in the area
interesting period property is expensive

Option 2) house/place of dreams type scenario- period stone cottage in Oxfordshire/Glos
PROs - as said "dream" stone period house
nearer to my home area so closer to friends/family
slightly more affordable period housing
CONs
long commute for dh
away from current links

Option 3) Godalming area (somewhat of a compromise possibly)
PROs
we love Godalming
it's 45 mins to dh's work, so not too far
CONs
we're unlikely to get a period house in the area in which we'd need to live school-wise

anyone, or are you all out house-hunting on the way back from school?

My partner drives to work and it take him an hour and a half each way so we're moving nearer his work because he hates it. It's also very expensive it costs him £40 odd a week in petrol.

MissChief · 21/04/2006 17:25

yeah, petrol's another factor though dh loves spending time in the car (as opposed to chasing children into or out of bed)

OP posts:
MissChief · 21/04/2006 18:11

bumping - bedtime not the best time to do so, oh well...

jenkel · 21/04/2006 18:16

I would tend to stick to what you know in option 1 rather than go for a long commute or move to an area that is totally new to you, unless you can do more research on Godalming. So I would put them in this order.

Option 1
Option 3
Option 2

MissChief · 21/04/2006 18:26

it's tempting to stay local but then i think it may end up being a short-term move..

OP posts:
MissChief · 21/04/2006 18:27

although henley might suit for option 1- don't know if anoyone's there?

OP posts:
MissChief · 22/04/2006 09:15

bump

OP posts:
MissChief · 22/04/2006 10:08

nobody?!

OP posts:
MissChief · 24/04/2006 13:05

oh bump (if anyone still cares)
apologies for the crappy indecision - can't get my head round it all!

You're not STILL dithering are you?? Grin

Think Flum had something to do with Henley - possibly her in-laws? She might be worth CAT-ing.

Think I'd put long commute down the bottom of the list TBH.

Good luck - try not to think of it as a long-term decision though - concentrate on the next 5-7 years. A lot can change in that time - more travel for DH, you wanting to work, lots more activities for the kids (and wanting to do more with them). You might find secondary school options would mean a move anyway IYKWIM.

MissChief · 25/04/2006 17:58

Hi FN - I know, sorry to be pathetic! Blush
As we've still not got an offer on ours, currently seems like we've got all the time in the world to find the perfect place (yeah, right) - trouble is dh insists it is for the long-term so I find myself checking upmystreet/Ofsted/Key stage results/school websites/property websites for every blooming place (or so it seems). Still there are worse problems in the world, aren't there? We'll get there eventually!
Hope you're well anyway, how did the revision go? How's yr new post-toddler life working out?
Smile

ok, misschief, here is what to do with your life: Grin

move to your period stone cottage in glos/oxfords; if your DH would put up with the commute, why not?

Why put up with compromises in life, you only get one chance in life so you may as well try to acheive what you actually WANT!

You'd have the sort of house you really want
You'd be closer to family support and old friends
As a family it is fairly easy to make new links in a new area.

There, that's sorted, let me know when you go!!!!

MissChief · 25/04/2006 18:42

you read my mind, sparkle Grin. This has always been my preference for the past few yrs but dh's job made it difficult. Now he says he does think it's worth the commute..Cross fingers!

Farnham ??????????? Grin

Sparklemagic · 25/04/2006 18:48

best of luck. I think if I were you I would stick to my guns about the area I wanted, as your DH is so definite that this move is for the long term...might as well be where you want to be.

We did this recently, moved last yr to a seaside town (my little dream!) because I suddenly thought I wanted to get it done before DS got caught up in the school system - and it has been the best move ever, the quality of life you feel from actually being in the place you want to be every day, is surprising!

MissChief · 25/04/2006 18:48

there's always one trouble-maker Grin
Hi there, I may be indecisive, but we're definitely not moving to Farnham, nice though it is!

OP posts:
MissChief · 25/04/2006 18:49

that was to Ladysherlock, btw...!

OP posts:
MissChief · 25/04/2006 18:51

..and glad you like yr move, sparkle, seaside sounds lovely! You're wise to have done this pre-school,that's why it's harder now with ds1 already there. Still, he's still young enough to adapt.

Don't worry, ks, I appreciate a helpful stalker! So you're acclimatising then? It is hard getting used to being out of London, isn't it?
Problem is we can't get a period house (within budget) in Godalming (well, Busbridge for Busbridge/Rodborough).
Are there any other areas within G worth a look?

cod · 25/04/2006 18:59

MissChief · 25/04/2006 19:04
