She keeps holding food in her mouth, until its all stuck down by her gums and I have to scrape it out, it does'nt seem she wants to do it, its like she cant help it. The only thing I can think of is, maybe her back teeth are on their way and it hurts to chew, anyones elses LO done this? she is 2.5 btw.

like a hampster? Saving it for later?

lionhearted · 20/04/2006 15:08

How old is she? Can you make a point of giving her water to wash it down?

lionhearted · 20/04/2006 15:10

Um, I'm thinking... I'm thinking, someone else will be along soon, I'm sure Smile.

waterfalls · 20/04/2006 15:17

She wont take a drink, she clamps her mouth shut for anything upto an hour, and then decided I have to fish it out of her mouth with my fingers........gross.

waterfalls, I have never come across this. How is your dd's speech. Is it clear? All I can think of is whether there is a speech & language therapist you can consult - there are SALT drop-in clinics where I live. When my dd was having trouble establishing bf-ing after a stint in special care, a SALT dropped by to look at her lip/mouth/tongue/swallowing actions.

Sorry I cannot be more helpful.

waterfalls · 20/04/2006 15:50

Thanks blueshoes, so far her speech seems normal, she does'nt do it with all her food, but I dont think its a habit she's picked up either, as she gets slightly disressed.

Any history of obsessive compulsive behaviour in your/dp's family? Sorry to trot out all these possibilities.

lummox · 20/04/2006 15:53

prob not the same thing, but my ds is getting his canines and keeps doing a really long, drawn out Prince Charles type face which makes food go down by his gums. he will have water, though, so it mostly swishes out again. i think he's doing it because his teeth hurt and he's trying to draw the food away from them.

it looks awful. but not as bad as having to fish it all out. my sympathies.

Well we think my niece may have OCD (6YRS) but no-one else.

Can dd tell you it hurts? How about giving her some Calpol and see if that gets her to relax. It could really just be teething molars, esp if you say she is distressed. I remember the itchy gnawing pain which makes me want to bite down. BTW, I suspect my dd (same age) is teething her molars as well and she wakes up at night with a scream. I just shoot Calpol into her.

blueshoes · 20/04/2006 16:01

Your niece is a bit far removed if no one else above her in your family has it. I do think teething is the most likely cause.

waterfalls · 20/04/2006 16:02

She normally tells me when she is in pain, dont think her gums are hurting, but they may be uncomfortable when she is eating I suppose.

Does she do it just with particular foods? Does it depend on the texture?

waterfalls · 24/04/2006 11:29

Arrrrrrrggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, for 3 hours now she has had her mouth clamped shut, she is now doing it with just saliva.

OP posts:
waterfalls · 24/04/2006 11:30

Does'nt matter what texture the food is, even water and juice.
