This may have been done before so sorry if repeating.

Friends are getting married soon and are spending £20K not including honeymoon.

I am gobsmacked, is this the norm now?

How on earth do you spend £20K?

Yep! I think it's going to be a big wedding - approx 200 guests for the reception, then more in the evening, but still!

We spent about £10k, including honeymoon (which was about £5k in total). DH had a new dinner jacket, my mum made my dress, we had a sit down dinner for about 60 and then a buffet in the evening for about 80 at a very nice hotel nearby. In fact the whole wedding was there.

Having said that, hardly any of the buffet got eaten (people still too full from dinner and evening guests had obviously eaten before they came) and we got quite a few hundred back on the bar tab. (Must've all been virtually teetotal!)

We did have an ab fab day and the honeymoon was amazing.

It's clear that everyone had a great day on far less than £70k!!! I can't imagine what they will spend it all on (well, I can, but I still can't see why it's necessary!).

Blimey. Mine was going to be about £2k (me and MrNC paying for top floor of riverside pub, plus food for 100). Then my parents wanted their only child to have a proper do and mentioned that PlaceWeCouldn'tRefuse was in their pricerange - £3k for room hire. So we said yes.

However the venue only permitted 6 catering firms, from the expensive, to the very expensive, to the 'if you have to ask you can't afford it'. And then my mum went batshit - my dress wasn't good enough, I had to have one made, she had to get flowers, engraved invites, two cakes from some posh baker instead of the £75 M&S one we had planned (and was identical to it...), and she went ballistic about my not getting round to getting shoes dyed to match my dress (which was floor-length so couldn't see shoes and I have really odd feet and no poncy wedding shop shoes fit anyway!)

Must have been around £15k in the end, and have to admit that if I had my time again I'd have just said no. The evening in the pub was the best bit. Plus our honeymoon which we paid for as well (about £1500 for 2 weeks in Italy). I needed it to recover from MumZilla!
