what you would you say that that meant?

ie... this film is an extreme distortion of the play.

Okay so I'm blocked. I can't make the first paragraph of my assignment work. Help me! Please? Grin

Have I told you lately that I love you? [sickly sweet pleading grin]

I would say you're probably talking about Roman Polanski's Macbeth Wink Grin

compo · 19/04/2006 13:44

that they have taken dramtic license with the original work. Like the recent dramatising of the Crucifixion in Manchester compared to the gospels

Ledodgy · 19/04/2006 13:44

I'd say the film was an extremely distorted version of the play.

georginarf · 19/04/2006 13:44

that the film bears some resemblence to the play but they have taken the bones of the play and mucked about with them - so some of it's still recognisable but it's been distorted, and a lot. and also that the play came first and the film has based itself on the play but changed it

oh no I've confused myself now!

edam · 19/04/2006 13:46

That the film trades on the success of the play but actually is rubbish.

motherinferior · 19/04/2006 13:48

Is based very loosely on the play.

georginarf · 19/04/2006 13:48

ah I think Edam has hit the nail on the head....

motherinferior · 19/04/2006 13:49

X film, which is an unsuccessful version of the original play Y...

Frenchgirl · 19/04/2006 13:51

'extreme distortion' actually makes me wince
basically they've mucked with the original play and lost a lot of its meaning

MadameDeMars · 19/04/2006 14:00

Thank you ladies.

Am reformatting my opening paragraph now.

Hinker.......... how did you guess?

Grin to you all. Can you feel the love?

I'd say it means Keith Chegwin has a very bad haircut and some questionable breeches.

Tortington · 19/04/2006 14:04

they took something which was rather good and chaged it so they could get some arty faarty recognition
"critically acclaimed" is code for - dont watch me i am boring.

MadameDeMars · 19/04/2006 14:15

So now I can't make the first sentence work (yes I know... why should you all do the work and I get all the glory? Just life I guess! lol).

How can I use a definition of extreme distortion as my opening para whilst not committing to saying that the film is an extreme distortion? I think it's a distortion, just not a totally extreme one (if you can account for the fact that 75% of the text is missing and Polanski had a big budget and could edit till the cows - or witches - came home)

Remember how much I love you all Grin

Could you maybe find a critic/reviewer who does, in effect, say it is an extreme distortion of the play (most be lots of those to choose from) and use this as an epigraph or starting point. Then you could moderate or revise their view and go on to detail your own? Does that make sense?

MrsBadger · 19/04/2006 14:27

Extreme distortions of literary works are frequently seen in modern media, as film makers and novelists trade on the success of original narratives.

then you can go on to discuss whther or not the Polasnki version is such a distortion...

MadameDeMars · 19/04/2006 14:28

thank you lionhearted... have found the very thing Smile

OP posts:
JoolsToo · 19/04/2006 14:28

Does it mean 'have you actually seen the play? Grin

MadameDeMars · 19/04/2006 14:28

My undying love goes to you MrsBadger Grin

I have jools in many forms, but it's the Polanski that is being studied for this assignment. Thank you all. Why I didn't just come here a couple of weeks ago I don't know. Could have saved myself moments (lol) of agony!-

Would love to read the end version, as a very ex - English teacher this has really whetted my appetite! I am vaguely thinking about going back to it when DD goes to school. Hope it goes well. Smile

MadameDeMars · 19/04/2006 14:54

Email me on lovelymarslady at aol dot com and I will send you the final version. In fact as you are an ex English teacher I may well send you many versions as I attempt to finish it. Grin

All input gratefully and gladly received.

I can't believe how much I do and don't know anymore. I think that the hardest thing is getting the essays started. Once I have then I'm on a roll. Occasionally the opening paragraph just won't come together for me. Still, it's only assignment 2 of 6 Grin

What exactly is it you are studying for? I know what you mean about can't beliebe how much I don't know any more. About the most literary thing I do is organise a reading group. A while back we discussed a classic I had studied for my degree, so I got out my old notes. Couldn't believe how coherently I wrote when I was at uni, and how much like a mouse dancing on a keyboard I write now! Will e-mail you later, thanks, just off for school run Smile

MadameDeMars · 28/04/2006 14:28

just bumping for my own reference as I have to re-write the bloody thing as my pc died! Sad
