and was wondering how clean etc I should leave it for the new people.I will have to tackle the cooker and will clean and hoover everywhere but do we need to fill all the picture holes etc. Also we have a few very big mirrors which are made to fit the space iykwim and I was thinking of leaving them in place but dp says they may not want them. Also there is a bench in the garden that I don't want as it won't suit new place AAAh!!I thought I had everything done but seems to be getting worse!

We didn't fill in pictures holes, etc. but didn't have lots and nothing huge anyway. I'd leave the mirrors if they fit the space. You could always ask them via the estate agents about the mirrors and bench though.

I just left the house clean and tidy. Hoovered round, wiped out cupboards, etc. But then everyone is likely to clean themselves as moving in as well I find.

Can you contact the new people and ask if they are interested in the bits you don't want/need? I've never filled in picture holes and the chances are the new people will be redecorating anyway and will deal with them then.

I've always cleaned to the best of my ability, given that you are having to work around removal men and very often your cleaning stuff has already been packed or the water or electricity has been cut off, thereby affecting your ability to clean.

The more stuff I pack the worse the house looks! It was lovely when they viewed it!Windows look filthy too

Talk to them - they might appreciate you leaving the mirors and bench or would rather you removed them. Presuming you have a few weeks, if they don’t want htem, pop them into your local paper for collect only and you might make enough for a meal out.
As for tidiness, we have moved a lot (11 times in 10 years) and I always leave it dust free, hoovered, empty outdoor bins, cut the grass, check all light bulbs work etc but don’t go as far as to fill hook marks. After all, they will probably be hanging their own up and covering up many of the marks immediately. I usually leave the hooks in rather than leave holes as I think it looks tidier and more useful for new owners.
Don’t beat yourself up over it though. I spent almost a week cleaning and prepping our last house (it wasn’t a tip before but with children it was hardly immaculate). We had agreed to leave the oven and had spent a lot of money on cleaners and plenty of elbow grease. We popped back round for a cuppa about a month afterwards to pick up post etc as agreed and could not get over how filthy and messy it was - and they had thrown out the oven! Rather embarrassed, she admitted that they felt they couldn’t say no to us to leave it but had a new one arrive within the week of arriving! So much for all my effort!

ive moved house enough times to write a book, and evey time the new place has needed alot of cleaning. if it was me i would wait until the house was empty and blitz it!! and then leave some light bulbs and a card!!!

noddyholder · 17/04/2006 11:36

I have moved a lot too but this house seems to be particularly hassle-y.I always leave it hoovered but it looks so messy with all the screw holes etc but I am leaving them I don't have much time I am moving out Friday!

dONT FORGET TO LEAVE LOO ROLL.

I'd ask through the estate agent about the mirrors etc (or can you get their phone no/email address and ask direct?).

None of the places we've bought have been that clean and deffo no picture holes filled! This house was covered in black dog hairs when we moved in which was pretty gross. Otherwise, I think if you've removed all your rubbish and there aren't any really filthy bits, you've done your job.

misdee · 17/04/2006 15:25

yes clean it as much as u are able. when we moved into our flat some minging person had shaved theirs legs etc in the bath and not cleaned it. [bleurgh]
