Can anyone relate to this at all, or is anyone on here a doctor with some advice to give.

i am realy worried. I went to see my nan last weekend and then we got a call that she was rushed in with pains in her chest. went to see her in hospital and they cant find anything wrong physically but she is acting weird and well its like alzhiemers cos she is forgetting things and that. iasked the doctor if she had a bang on the head but they cant find anything at all. I know it might be the age thing, but she was completely normal last week and not like this at all?

any advice anyone please, i would be very grateful

thanks Sad

Totally agree with Tipex.

Also, did they give her any new meds at all? Anything, analgesia, blood pressure meds? Loads of things can cause 'temporary' side effects.

I once took codeine and it sent me insane!!

Hope your nan is ok tho. Have you spoken to her gp?

dur! Just spotted that she's in hospital.

Sounds trite but urine infections can make a sane person seem like they're on another planet. One would assume they've tested your nan's wee but I work in the NHS, the motto should be never assume!!

fanny5 · 13/04/2006 21:01

they are checking her medication and they did say off the record that she may have had a slight stroke but they will find out more on monday when they get the results back. she hasnt got any normal signs of stroke ie paralasys etc but they said that can happen. she is on tablets for thyroid and blood pressure so that is a thought

thanks

and of course, if they've never met your nan before they may assume that's her normal state Angry

Tipex is right about all these possibilities - elderly people often get confused with infections or by going into hospital. Someone is sent in after a fall and ends up confused.

Only other thought is what about her medicines? Does she take several different ones? Has the hospital prescribed anything new? Many medicines have the side-effect of causing confusion in the elderly. And many elderly people take lots of different medicines and end up with all sorts of weird interactions between them.

Don't let the doctors assume it is inevitable side-effect of ageing (as I'm afraid they do, sometimes), if she was fine last week, then there's something wrong now which should be treated. And treated as soon as possible because the longer she's in, the harder it becomes for her to get home again. She needs thorough investigation for infections/ stroke/depression and a medicines review.

Dehydration can make old people act very confused.

twokids · 13/04/2006 21:43

I think you are right to be concerned but don't worry too much. when my stepmum was ill a while ago and in hospital(she's in her late 70's) she became very confused and had trouble remembering things. once she came home and got back in her routine she is fine. Hope your Nan is better soon

my grandma was rushed into hospital with an angina attack and the medication they gave her made her very confused (so much so she slapped a nurse, she was mortified when she got home) but when she did come home she told me she'd been on holiday.....she had no concept of time either, and it took a couple of weeks for her to get back to normal. this was a few years ago and, recently she started to get confused again and it was all to do with her blood pressure and the doctors struggling to get her medication at the right level.
i know how upsetting it is to see this happen to someone you love, my grandma had run a household of 12 children and was very organised and with it. it was so upsetting to see her forget very simple things....
