Rattling is driving me MAD!

I've got a 13month old Rover 25 (you thought I was going to say baby didn't you?!) which had a service last month
The last few weeks there has been a rattling coming from the boot - loud enuf to hear over the radio - and its driving me BONKERS! There isn't anything in the boot so its not that, it sounds like a marble in a tin, or as if, say, the boot isn't properly closed (it is) and is rattling in and out of the lock. Its particularly prominant over bumps and at lower speeds
Has any of you any idea what it could be before I go insane with it?

Toolkit? Spare wheel?

WideWebWitch · 09/01/2004 12:23

Are you sure it's from the boot? I know nothing about these things but took my Peugeot to a garage recently for a noise (sounds similar) expecting to need a new exhaust (it seemed to be coming from the back too) and it turned out to be something loose in the roof. If I put my hand on the roof inside it stops. It also stops at higher speeds/revs. Weird, but at least the garage bloke was nice enough to tell me the truth rather than ripping me off for a part I didn't need.

It could be the exhaust coming adrift under the car....

toolkit? Ha!!!! What is it I ever said to make you think I'd have a toolkit!! Not the spare wheel though, only thing I checked!
How would I check for a stone in the wheel?

Most modern cars have a small built-in toolkit, Lisa. It might be under the carpet, tucked into the side or even under a little flap in the boot lid! Your handbook should tell you where to look so you can check no spanners are loose!

Lou33 · 09/01/2004 16:40

Loose light fitting?

Lisa78 · 09/01/2004 17:12

Oh God, Sue, that sounds very technical!
But then have DH - why have a dog and bark yourself!?

Not lightfitting Lou, its too metallic for that

Will give prize for one who gets it right
Prize at my discretion though so you might not want it!

Is it your lipstick rolling around in the back?? Yes, this is what a mechanic asked by friend when she complained of a rattling noise in her car.

SoupDragon · 09/01/2004 18:09

Are you missing any small children?

charliecat · 09/01/2004 18:20

Er we had a noise and it was the wheel bearing, or something like that and it was dangerous, could you not pop back to the garage and get them to listen just in case? We had to get a new bit of something, sorry, but i know what i mean and i know the noise drove us mad too.

charliecat · 09/01/2004 18:31

Ball joint says dp. Please look into it just in case.

JanH · 09/01/2004 18:41

soupie, do your boys rattle?

Lisa78 · 09/01/2004 21:14

Mine only rattle when I shake them soupdragon!
Thanks Charliecat, kept thinking I ought to take it back in, but couldn't be bothered, but this has given me the incentive I need
As if I'd lose my lippy though Browbeaten! (I need it to aid my pathetic act if I break down!)

Let me know what happens, I couldnt read this thread without feeling i had some vital information that could be of great importance to you.........!!!!!!!! I knew we had our rattle for a reason, because 12 months later a fellow mumsnetter would have one too!

SoupDragon · 10/01/2004 14:21

They don't rattle as such but they do bump about a bit if you accidentally leave them locked in the boot.

Browbeaten · 10/01/2004 14:29

Of course you would Lisa78 as well as fluttery eylashes - a girl after my own heart

Lisa78 · 10/01/2004 15:24

I know! When everyone nags me that I need to know how to change a wheel, check my oil etc, I just say no I don't, all I need is my lippy, my mobile and my helpless voice! Do I pay for breakdown cover and have a DH and then learn about cars? Methinks not

and the prize goes to

none of you - we were all wrong! It was the boot seal AND the seat catches. I don't quite know what this means, but I drove home rattle free!
