I have just recieved an application form for housing from wakefield district council. I have to send it back as soon as poss but the trouble is i don't know west yorkshire at all so don't know which areas to pick. We were hoping to go and visit to have a look but won't be able to do this for a while. Any info that anyone has on good/bad areas would be a big help, especially the following :

Ferry Fryston, Castleford
Kinsley, Hemsworth
Streethouse, Pontefract
Ferrybridge, Knottingly
Warwick, Knottingly
Lupset, Wakefield

Thanx

Also meant to say, when i rang wakefield council to ask for the form they said that their waiting lists are pretty short because they are always getting properties become available. Is it me or is that a BAD sign.

Hi Nutcracker.

If you go to www.upmystreet.com ant type in each town name it gives you loads of info, even an ACORN profile.

I'm in N yorkshire but don't know anything about W Yorks other than dh's uncle was born in Castleford and it is supposedly quite a rough area, as are parts of Wekefield I believe.

Sorry I can't be more help.
Good Luck!

Thanx N - I went after a house in Kirkbymoorside yesterday (thats north yorkshire isn't it ??) but it had gone. Told them off for lesaving it on web site as available and they said they do that to get people interested

Have tried up my street a couple of times, what is the acorns thing ??

OP posts:
Northerner · 09/01/2004 11:18

Not quite sure if it stands for anything, but it's a description of the area abd it tells you about the wealth, employment figures, schooling results etc. Not sure if you need a postcode though.

Kirbymoorside is N Yorks yes. North Yorks is lovely IMO.

Wher are you now?

nutcracker · 09/01/2004 11:21

I'm in Sutton Coldfield (birmingham) in a 2 bed flat with 3 kids. I suppose i could try and ring a council in N.Yorkshire too. Do they have district councils ?? Which would you suggest ??

Go to www.northyorks.gov.uk. The districts are Craven, Scarborough, Ryedale, Hambleton, Richmondshire, Selby and Harrogate. I'm in Harrogate (www.harrogate.gov.uk)

Harrogate is lovely, as is Scarborough and Richmondshire.

Castleford is going to be featured in a Channel 4 programme about urban regeneration - another makeover programme! Can't do links but it's here:
www.telegraph.co.uk/property/main.jhtml?xml=/property/2004/01/03/pcast03.xml&sSheet=/property/2004/01/03/ixptop01.html&secureRefresh=true&_requestid=150383
Ferry Fryston is mentioned. Sounds like it's near a big power station

Lisa78 · 09/01/2004 12:22

OY NORTHERNER!!! I live in Castleford!!!!!! Its not rough at all, I think it was about 10 years ago though, very much a mining town and when the pits closed, the town went to pot! However, its certainly been on the up since then, we moved here 3.5 years ago from a lovely area of Leeds, (near Roundhay Park) and I wouldn't have moved if it were rough, cos I am a snob! (Well I am!) There are a couple of factories here and there is the Ferry Fryston Power station but they are on the outskirts, a couple of areas in the town centre are distinctly tatty, but we have some nice shops, incl M & S, Boots, Woolies, and the main banks, plus there is Freeport outlet village, and the Xscape centre (ski slopes, cinema, starbucks and the rest). After living in Leeds, the people came as a bit of a shock - distinct yorkshire accent and somewhat familiar - terrifyingly down to earth for a big city girl like myself, used to not knowing my neighbours - but it is just friendliness. People take as they find, to use the yorkshire expression!
I live on a brand new estate, with a big park on one side and fields behind the house, the council estate is largely owner occupied now so it looks pretty well maintained as far as I know - certainly better than some I have seen! Pontefract and Wakefield are nice towns too, so far as I have seen of them - which isn't a huge amount admittedly, but I don't know what the council estate areas are Nutty. Still, if you moved to say Hemsworth and didn't like it, there is probably a lot more chance of you getting transferred to an area you preferred. There are lots of smaller village type areas around the areas you mentioned and I believe Wakefield council seems to have a policy of buying houses here and there, rather than just on one big estate.

Northerner · 09/01/2004 12:27

Sorry Lisa78. Do hope I haven't offended you. I stand corrected it sounds very nice. I shouldn't judge should I.

bundle · 09/01/2004 12:29

nutcracker, when I was looking for rented accommodation in London a few years back I rang local police stations to get the 'vibe' on particular roads within postcodes - told valuable info about 'dodgy' bits of certain districts, they couldn't have been more helpful which I found surprising.

nutcracker · 09/01/2004 12:36

Thanx for the info. I've just been on up my street and checked a few areas out but the acorn reports aren't very good so far. LISA - without giving away your address, is there any way you can give me the exact area of the council estate that is mostly owner occupied ?? Oh and do you think it would be easy to make friends there ???

OP posts:
nutcracker · 09/01/2004 12:38

Good Idea BUNDLE i never thought of that.

course you didn't Northerner!
Nutty, I don't know what you would call the area for the council estate - townville or airedale maybe? Near the magnet pub (well known Cass landmark!!!)
I think a lot of the council estates in the area are largely owner occupied, from the govt initatives in the late 80's, early 90's. Have to tell you though, on that estate 3 houses trim up for Christmas - am sure planes think its a landing strip!!! Its featured on the local tv news and people actually go to see them!!! The airedale lights, they're called!
And yes, you'll make friends in no time, people are very welcoming at toddler groups, school gates etc - even in the high street! For example, we went to a NY party last year at a neighbours whose name we didn't know - we'd just said hi on the fields as we walked our respective dogs, they're now good friends. This year we got a similar invite from a woman round the corner I've said hello to a few times

nutcracker · 09/01/2004 12:54

Thanx for that DADSLIB- I have just read the acorn repoorts for those areas on up my street and they weren't good.

OP posts:
nutcracker · 09/01/2004 12:57

Airedale is on the list i've got and then The rivers, Redhill, Airedale and Ferry Fryston come under it. Good news about the welcoming people as i find it quite hard to make friends as am quite shy and apparently to snobbish to be living on a council estate (so i've been told)

Well i hope not DAFSLIB. At the end of the day i've got to compromise on something or i'm going to be stuck here forever. My main concerns are that the area is not really rough or run down. As long as the schools are good and the people are nice then thats o.k

OP posts:
nutcracker · 09/01/2004 13:06

That should of been DADSLIB not DAFSLIB, sorry.
