Our sky box is on it's way out but I resent the fact that new sky customers can have a sky+ box for £89 but we customers who have given them our money for years have to pay a £10 a month subscription for the same privilige!

Anyway, has anyone tried to call them and managed to get out of paying the tenner?

I am tempted to try and call their bluff and tell them we want to cancel (currently pay £36 a month) but wondered what my chances are

Hmm not sure what your chances are but when we cancelled sky to move over to NTL they ask why you want to cancel etc etc just tell them as they did start offering my dp all sorts of stuff @ very good rates so worth a try, if you feel it is not working & you dont really want to cancel your sky just say you will have a think about it and call them back when you have spoken to your partner/husband.

quelsouci · 08/04/2006 22:00

It's so unfair that expats aren't officially allowed to have sky. Sky+ is prohibitively expensive - about £500 for upgrade from regular sky. So I resent that you residents can have it so cheaply & not have to worry about having it confiscated! Grin Pay your £10.

Ledodgy · 08/04/2006 22:02

If you don't mind missing out on sky for a month i'd be tempted to cancel then start again a few weeks later as a new customer.

Dustanyone · 08/04/2006 22:04

Trouble is, its £10 a month for something we would not use!

If we had sky+ we would tape while watching something else , not sit in separate rooms watchibg different things.

Ledodgy, could we do that? Thought they might be funny about reconnecting us.

Also we can not get ntl. Would sky know this from our address and so not offer us such a good deal?

Ledodgy · 08/04/2006 22:07

Oh so do they make you have a sky plus box now? Do they not do the normal boxes anymore?

Ledodgy · 08/04/2006 22:09

oops crossed posts. I'm not sure but I assume if you cancelled and waited till it was properly cancelled iyswim bide your time then joined again I don't see why you couldn't get the same deal as a new customer from their point of view it's a choice between having you as a new customer or not at all.

Ledodgy · 08/04/2006 22:10

Are you married? Because if you weren't it would be even easier to bluff them as you could use the partners name that isn't on the sky bill atm and if queried say the other person moved Grin

Dustanyone · 08/04/2006 22:11

I think you can, just wondered what the chances of getting sky+ were Smile

Dustanyone · 08/04/2006 22:13

Thats a good idea, to use dp name and I'm sure I could manage without sky for a month, not sure about the kids though Wink

For the month you don't subscribe you could buy a Freeview box & still have a couple of kids channels. We have one upstairs for DD (age 4) to have Cbeebies. Let us know how you get on cos I've been tempted to try this type of thing before. We're £43 a month & it's a scunner to think we'd be over £50 to get Sky+

SparklyGothKat · 09/04/2006 15:28

lol, I plan to cancel the sky here (in DH's name) when we move then get Sky+ in my name Grin

waterfalls · 09/04/2006 15:51

When we moved they were gonna charge us £40 to move our dish, we said in that caase we want to cancel, they put us on hold, came back and said they would move the dish for free.

MeggLeVache · 09/04/2006 15:58

We did - dh had heard from an ex engineer that they don't like to lose custom and will not offer to help you until you write to decide to tell them you're off - then they waive the charge -
It worked for us anyway - and the first box they gave us was a duff so dh stamped his foot again and they gave us a new box with twice the memory.

Result.

MeggLeVache · 09/04/2006 16:00

Waterfalls didn't see your post - yes exactly - this is what I hear time and time again.

Emma7 · 09/04/2006 16:57

We are fairly new customers (got sky in January) and we were offered a cheap deal on the cost of the sky + box but still had to pay the monthly fee I think so decided against it - are you sure that new customers don't pay the monthly fee?

Dustanyone · 09/04/2006 21:41

Yeah... on the website there is an offer for new customers to get the sky+ box for £89

VickyA · 10/04/2006 14:13

I've just done this, so apologies for the long post, but here goes:

If you're no longer under contract (12 months after having Sky installed), ring Sky and ask to be put through to cancellations. When you get through, say something like you've got a disjointed viewing pattern with kids, not making most of Sky, Sky+ package for existing customers is far too expensive, and you're planning to switch to Freeview and get a DVD recorder.
You should then get offered £99 for SKY+, but you can hold out, saying it's still too expensive and you might as well buy a DVD recorder with your subs. You'll then be put on hold while they consult their manager, and you should then get an offer of £65 for Sky+ fully installed (unless you have a sky dish up a chimney or on top of a block of flats...)

Be warned though, the Sky+ boxes are NOT flawless - they can make irritating whirring noises etc. but if you check out an online av forum you should find answers to most questions.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

layla · 10/04/2006 17:18

We are just about to cancel Sky even though I will miss create and craft but so what we are seriously fed up with paying for bloody repeats constantly.

Racers · 10/04/2006 17:23

in addition to VickyA's post, I think there are certain days of the week when 'threats to cancel' are more likely to have a favourable outcome. I think it is Thursdays. This was for re-installation or new skybox though, not sure about upgrate to sky+. DH will have got this from one of the sky fora, so definately worth checking it out before you call. My friend got a half price new install of box/dish but she could have held out for free and would have had better chance on a Thursday, apparently (IIRC).

whimsy · 10/04/2006 17:49

We were with Sky but I cancelled 6mths ago had a call last week to see if I wanted to go back. In the end I've been given a sky+ box for FREE and 6mths half price off the world package. He did say that if after 6mths I reduced my package I would have to pay a £10 recording fee (not sure what that is, but hey I got sky+ for free Wink )

GarfieldsGirl · 10/04/2006 19:02

Dustanyone - I thought the same as you when I was getting Sky+, but looked into it. If you're going to have multiroom you're far better off upgrading as your current Sky box will be your extra one. If you cancel and take out Sky+ as a new customer and want multiroom tehy will chatrge you £199 for the extra box.

new customers also have to pay £10 per month subscription.

galaxy7 · 11/04/2006 20:35

I've just done the same as VickyA, threatened to cancel saying I wasn't prepared to pay £65 for them to come out and fix our sky box, got put through to cancellations and offered sky+ for £65 with free installation and no monthly subsciption.

They are coming on Friday to install it Grin
