Why is my washing machine leaking?

Its leaking from underneath somewhere every time I do a load, I have emptied the filter, is it knackered?

Is it the machine or the pipes at the back?

Mine had a steady trickle of water coming from underneath that took ages to track down. Turned out to be a small crack in the main outlet hose that was seeping gradually. Easy to replace though.

SparklyGothKat · 07/04/2006 23:33

are all the pipes tightly fitted on, could they have come loose?

waterfalls · 07/04/2006 23:40

It could be the pipes, but I cant move it, will get dh to check, thanksSmile

Because it's fucked??

waterfalls · 07/04/2006 23:45

Why do you say that??, its only 2 years old.

Ignore me Waterfalls (is that a pun for 'broken washing machine'? Grin) .. I have had it with applicances of all kinds this week.. and inept engineers that come to fix them.. and then fail to!!

I'm sure it's not fucked. It's probably something very simple.. but I know not what sorry.

water hose not fitted tightly enough, outlet pipe not fitted tightly enough.....we have just dealt with both, a steady seep from both that has probably been like it for years...

Spagblog · 08/04/2006 07:48

2yrs old - well you should get another year out of it Wink

We took an extended warrenty out on ours and it is coming to an end...Guess when it is going to kick the bucket!?

Pruni · 08/04/2006 08:38

Are you sure it's coming from underneath?
I only aske because we were,t hen observed it during a cycle.
The water was coming from a pipe quite high up, but trickling down and seeming to come from underneath.
The landlords' plumbing leaves a lot to be desired....
And now we have a broken seal...

waterfalls · 09/04/2006 16:07

Great, dh has stopped the leak, but now it wont fecking spinAngry

OP posts:
SaintGeorge · 09/04/2006 16:08

How did he stop the leak?

waterfalls · 09/04/2006 16:17

It turned out it was just the filter, I had'nt emptied it properly.Blush

OP posts:

Might well be a blockage further down the pipes then.

Quite often when they stop spinning it is because they aren't draining properly. They have to 99% empty of loose water before the spin cycle kicks in.

waterfalls · 09/04/2006 16:20

Oh, now hwere near 99%, I took the clothes out to try and spin empty, and there are buckets of water in there.

OP posts:
SaintGeorge · 09/04/2006 16:25

Is it just the spin cycle that has stopped?

If so, I would investigate for blockage in all the pipes. Commonest cause is lime scale, you might need to detach the hoses and flush them through.

waterfalls · 09/04/2006 16:34

Well looking at the water, I dont think it is rinsing either. Have just flooded the kitchen by emptying the water through the filter, so it is now spinning, though it does'nt sound too healthy.

OP posts:
SaintGeorge · 09/04/2006 16:47

So if the spin cycle has kicked in again then it's not the motor playing up.

Still sounds like a major blockage somewhere that needs clearing.

waterfalls · 09/04/2006 16:52

Thanks saintgeorgeSmile

If you haven't guessed yet, I have hadthis problem before Smile

Hard water area, so limescale is a bstd

One trick I learnt from the engineer: remove the hoses from the back of the machine and take outside, preferably somewhere quite open. Stand on the piping carefully to break up any chunks of limescale inside. Then 'lasso' the piping over your head so that the limescale is forced out by gravity.

Works a treat, although my patio doors where a mess afterwards.

waterfalls · 09/04/2006 17:02

lol, yes I had guessed, will get dh to try that trick when he gets home, we are in a hard water area too, I shpould use calgon really but its so expensive.

OP posts:
SaintGeorge · 09/04/2006 17:06

Calgon is a total waste of time unless you use it from when the machine is new and then in every single load afterwards.

Descale monthly instead with a cup of vinegar thrown in the empty machine and set on a hot cycle.
