Fairly new to this board and I think this is my first post.

Anyway, I am in the process of opening my own publishing house, but cannot come up with a suitable name!! My first choice has always been Parchment Publishing, but after a lot of research I found this had been used and recently dissolved. I have come up with so many others, but they have all been used.

Help!!!!!

what kind of market are you aiming for?

georginarf · 07/04/2006 15:24

I like your posting name - can you use that?

are you wanting to go with the alliteration thing though - so Palimpset Publishing or something? What kind of publishing, or is it general?

adozenroses · 07/04/2006 15:28

I am focusing on fiction and am currently checking the market for what genre is most popular at the moment.

I wanted it to be something literary-related, but my husband thinks it should be more genral...not sure why!! As it is, my mind has ran out of ideas now and I'm completely stuck.

pantomnesia publishing?

MrsBadger · 07/04/2006 15:33

[whips out list of questions I used last time someone wanted advice on this]

check availability of domain names first!
Who is your target market? Who are your competitors? Do you want to blend in with them or stand out? What's your USP?

(DH set up his own business last year and I did all the names/design/logos/letterheads etc - all this info's vital before you make a decision)

CountessDracula · 07/04/2006 15:36

pergameneous publishing (means resembling parchment!)

adozenroses · 07/04/2006 16:29

That's a good name Countess Dracula.

Mrs Badger, I want to stand out from others, but also want the name to have some personal meaning. This has been my dream for a long time -I just cannot believe I can't come up with a name I like. My husband thought of inkspot publishing, which is nice.

I have spent the last few days searching through old books I love to see if they can give me some idea. I would really like the name to have some reference to Emily Bronte. I was going to use the name of her bulldog, Keeper...but would you believe, someone already has it!!!

I'm sure something will strike me with a blinding flash!!

Lockwood or Gondol

Kaz33 · 07/04/2006 16:34

When you have an idea you can check companies house website and do a free search of all company names to see if anyone has it already.

MrsBadger · 07/04/2006 16:38

or Thornton, where she was born?
Like Gondal - was always impressed with the 'Gondalling' in the Antonia Forest books

adozenroses · 07/04/2006 16:45

Gondal doesn't exist as a publishing company. I think that could be a possibility.

OP posts:
georginarf · 07/04/2006 16:47

yay! pick my suggestion!

Gondol Publishing sounds good

CountessDracula · 07/04/2006 16:57

Gondal sounds like an STD

(and I am not talking codes...)

MrsBadger · 07/04/2006 17:18

The Gondal Press? (NB check if it's Gondal or Gondol - I can't remember Blush)

ggglimpopo · 07/04/2006 17:21

Yes, Gondal is too like Gonad.

Which, on the other hand, might give it resonance.....Wink

georginarf · 07/04/2006 17:45

ah boo I do see the gonad point. it's Gondal - my typing is rubbish

shame though

what about Jabez or Branderham

thought of THrushcross but that def sounds unsavoury

expatinscotland · 07/04/2006 17:48

Oh, god, I'm horrid with titles. I'd probably give it a proper name - a place or a person whom I know or knew.

How about something that sums you up, eg if you're a bit "quirky" you could be Square Peg? Or something with a colour, like Purple Pig Publishing? (good logo, methinks! Penguin were certainly on to a winner with that) Spineless? Dog Eared? Or something very classy - House of something or other?
