it's not as good as it used to be, but you can get stuff cheaper there, depending on what you want

there is an outlet m&s, gap, levi, fat face, whittards, and more that i have forgotten

i have a link for it somewhere, i will look for it

Yes, it's worth a visit I'd say. Depends what you're into obviously, but at Gunwharf Quays I love the Monsoon there. all the shops are outlets so stuff IS cheaper - I find the M & S there a bit disappointing though, lots of questionable stuff I've never seen in the main shops!

Go to Tiger Tiger for lunch, it's really nice, reasonable prices, and a lovely big balcony looking over the harbour if weather permits!

Portsmouth town centre is no different or cheaper to anywhere else though. Southsea shopping Centre is nice, not far from Gunwharf and has John Lewis, Debenhams, Laura Ashley, Monsoon, Next, but again - no cheaper than any other town!

hth.

lou33 · 06/04/2006 20:19

i probably should say i dont shop in any of the stores i listed, i don't know why i remembered them!

Bugsy2 · 06/04/2006 20:31

I go when I'm down visiting my parents. There is a good Hobbs & Karen Millen, if you like that kind of thing. Quite a fun place to take children as well. Lots of room to run about & good views over the busy harbour.

BingoStingo · 06/04/2006 20:52

ive never been
dh has alwyas been when passing for one reason
you are meaking it soudn alluring
sister went u the spinnaker tower
siad it wasgreat

NannyL · 06/04/2006 21:02

Oh yes..... its 10 minutes away from em and i go all the time

the tower is great... but ONLY go on a sunny day so you can see more

The shops are good.... my favs are GAP, fatface, M&S white stuff, monsoon, clarks, Ralph Lauren, Levis shop, crew clothing.... but there are LOADS AND LOADS of others...

I go regualry living so close.... sometimes there are SOOOOOO many bargain clothes you cant decide what to have.... other times there is nothing you would ven want to be seen dead in...

TIP: DONT go near the end of kids holiday... give them at least a week or 2 to stock up... there are LOADS of good places to eat (you are spoiled for choice... most restuarants look over the sea)

at weekend tho it gets VERY busy... be prepared to que for ages to park, and parking is VERY expensive there, bit i love the place

another tip... as you leave and go left at the traffic lights onto the 1st proper main road watch out for the speed cameras in the 30 limit.... then again as you go onto the M275.... another speed camera where the motorway has a 40mph limit!

NannyL · 06/04/2006 21:03

Oh and i can see the tower from where i work.... as i wash up and sit down to eat dinner Grin
its pretty at night and they change the colours too

BingoStingo · 06/04/2006 21:03

god cathc ema ll speeindg
:)

Tommy · 06/04/2006 21:04

I always get Gap stuff for the DSs there and there is a Cadbury shop which is fab Grin Agree about M&S but every so often you can get a bargain there if you look hard enough. They also have Next now as well. And Clarks is good for slippers and wellies if you can't be bothered to take your children there to be measured! (although they do a proper measuring ervice like other Clarks)
I'm going there on Tuesday! Grin

NannyL · 06/04/2006 21:06

oh and despite the signs if you need the loo... dont que... use the ones in the baby changing by M&S!!! Wink

vickiyumyum · 06/04/2006 21:27

we have a second house in chichester and go most weekends and i drop into gunwharf quays, probably once a month, i love most of the shops there, as said by pp they are all outlet shops so cheaper than the main town, they ahve a fantastic, ralph lauren, gap, monsoon, hobbs, etc and you can spend a fortune there if you are not carfeul. loads of great places to eat as well, the kids particularly enjoy pizza express, but tiger tiger worth a try and i think its called the ha ha bar , thats good as well.

oh and just remebered they have a great molton brown shop as well as lk bennett for some fantatstic shoes.

BingoStingo · 07/04/2006 13:27

a second house?
really?
wow
lad di dah! a lol wodl say

SomethingAboutMary · 07/04/2006 16:00

Thanks everyone Smile

Some fantastic tips here i would not have had a clue about any of this so its all great help.

We were going to go this weekend but i dont really want to go when it going to be really busy! Do you think it would be ok on Monday? or probably still very busy due to kids holidays?

OP posts:
Tommy · 07/04/2006 16:20

have been there at the weekend and it wasn't too bad. I think there are more things going on at the weekend (for children if you wanted to take them) but I always go without them!!

beatie · 07/04/2006 16:32

A second home in Chichester! Shock That's an expensive city to have a first home in let alone a second! But Chichester is nice.

I'm not such a fan of Portsmouth and try to avoid it. I've always found outlet places very disappointing for clothes but like it for books, kitchen stuff etc... And Gunwharf does have nice places to eat or stop for a drink

GarfieldsGirl · 07/04/2006 17:38

I go quite regularly, but i'm only 5 mins away, and with blue badge park outside so don't have to pay Grin. Parking is much more expensive than the rest of Pompey. If you're going Monday driving in shouldn't be too bad, but it will probably still be quite busy inside. It is the best place to go here as everythings in one place and the Spinnaker Towers supposed to be very good, but I do find it quite expensive, especially the food places. The carvery van they haev in the main square though is delicious and I go down there just for that! It is a good day out, but If you've been to somewhere like Cheshire Oaks though, you will probably be very disappointed as I find CO much better and bigger (and cheaper).

vickiyumyum · 08/04/2006 11:45

it sounds good doesn't it! but cheating really as was given to me by my grandparents, but not officilaly mine as if we ever sell we have to share proceeds with my brother and sister!

but anyway back to gunwharf quays i am off there next saturday so if anyone passing and wants to meet for a coffee let me know, it would be great to meet some fellow mumsnetters.

p.s i will have kids with me, dd 3 weeks and ds2 4.

NannyL · 08/04/2006 13:31

there seemed to be a long que to get there today (about half an hour a go).... my sis and i are just back from shopping in Portsmouth!

GarfieldsGirl · 08/04/2006 18:05

vickiyumyum - I can't make next sat cos i'm going to Fratton Park, but next time you go down would be good to meet up. There's a Portsmouth thread in meet-ups I started if you want post on there.

intergalacticwalrus · 08/04/2006 18:08

I went to Gunwharf Keys once with an old boyfriend who took me sailing in some dodgy Naval base. I thought it was quite nice.

As for dodgy sailor man, he walked like a penguin, and ended up in charge of a submarine, and I "accidentally" lost touch.

Sorry, off subject there....
