If so what is it like there? Dh and I are going to view a house in Codicote and I'm wondering if it's a good place for a family with two young kids or if it's really remote with not much going on.

I live about 3 miles from Codicote. The village itself hasn't got a huge amount to do other than typical playgroups etc. However, you are very close to Welwyn village and Garden City where there is far more happening. It's also only half an hour to London by train.
Stevenage (although not the prettiest of places) has loads of entertainment-cinemas,bowling,restaurants,etc etc.Knebworth house is nearby and has a great adventure playground.
I take DD to whipsnade,London Zoo,WImpole farm etc.I think all in all it's a good place to bring up kids.....

Any other questions-fire away!

WICGUW (great name BTW!) - thanks for that. What are the people like there (age / families / snob factor etc, etc!)?

Lots of "30 somethings" and lots with kids, fair amount of commuters, and a good few "oldies".Basically a broad mix. Welwyn village is a bit snobby but only a bit,Codicote less so and I believe the school is good.
I haven't encountered much snobbishness at all, other than my own when I visit Stevenage and see the fag-smoking,pregnant teenagers with ponytails on the top of their heads and a 5yr old in a pushchair with a dummy in or worse still a bottle of tea....Wink

Fortunately,it has everything you may need but is far enough away....IYKWIM.

WHere are you moving from?

Pennies · 06/04/2006 09:40

Tht sounds OK. We're moving from North London to esacpe the the fag-smoking,pregnant teenagers with ponytails on the top of their heads and a 5yr old in a pushchair with a dummy in or worse still a bottle of tea (or round here more likely lager) and the gun-totin' yardies!

Is it as competitive as Harpenden seems to be? Have heard hideous tales of one upmanship and Uber-mumness from there.

Oh no-definitely not!!!!!!!!
Harpenden is just toooo scary

tessasmum · 06/04/2006 09:59

No-where is as competitive as Harpenden, its horrible. Worked there for 8 years but could never live there (even if we could afford it!)

WishICouldGiveUpWork · 09/04/2006 22:59

So how did you get on??????????????

What did you think of Codicote and did you manage to check out Welwyn/Knebworth?

Troutpout · 10/04/2006 07:46

WishICouldGiveUpWork · 10/04/2006 09:56

Yes Stevenage is pretty grim but fantastic for getting stuff....All the DIY sheds,a Toys R Us,giant Mothercare,Curry's,PC World etc etc.

WishICouldGiveUpWork · 11/04/2006 11:13

Oh dear Pennies-was it so bad you can't bear to tell us?

Pennies · 13/04/2006 14:16

Sorry didn't notice the thread got bumped.

The house was LOVELY! Really beautiful, just done up. The thing it is was too far from the village (you'd have to drive) and with two DD's under 2 I want to be somewhere more central.

We checked out Welwyn and loved it (though no so keen on WGC) so we're looking there too now. Dh has also decided he like Oxshott in Surrey now so we're looking there too.

Who knows where we'll end up at this rate!!
