Ds1 Fencing (I know!) £36
Ds2 Football £18
Dd French £49.50

Ds1,ds2 and dd all did swimming until they were about 10 and I can't contemplate how much it cost but as you say Codswallop very necessary

kmg1 · 05/01/2004 18:59

I was just thinking today mine seem pretty cheap to keep at the moment.

Ds1 (6) does swimming: £36 and Beavers c.£20
Ds2 (4) does swimming: £36

Total: £92

Oakmaiden · 05/01/2004 20:14

My son did football last term - it was a free club provided by the school, and funded through some lottery grant thing, I think...

zebra · 05/01/2004 20:25

What do they learn in swimming class at age 4-5? I want to send DS, but too late to sign up for this term, & anyway we might be moving (but we might not, too).

kmg1 · 05/01/2004 20:30

err... zebra they learn to swim! Our pool do water confidence classes for littlies to get them used to being in the water if they are not used to it. My 4.5yr old ds has just swum a width of the big pool after a couple of terms of lessons.

Slinky · 05/01/2004 20:45

Swimming for all 3 - £90 every 10 weeks (as others non-negotiable in our house even for our 4yo - other 2 started at 3.5/4yo.)

DD1 - Brownies = £10.00 per term plus any trips out - also £65 for a Pack Holiday at Easter.

DD1 - Tennis = £30.00 every 14 weeks
DS1 - Trampolining - £30.00 every 14 weeks.

DS1 has just had an offer of a place at Beavers -don't know how much that costs yet.

Lisa78 · 05/01/2004 20:58

Ha, wait till they get to aged 14 and the only possible response to your question is "too bloody much"!!!
To go off subject slightly, DS2 is 2 months old, when can I take him swimming (and will they make me bring him back home with me? )

Linnet · 05/01/2004 21:15

My dd goes to ballet which is £3 a week and is on during school terms and finishes for the holidays. It's paid weekly.

She also does Gymnastics which is about £20-£25 per term depending on whether or not it's on every week and depending on how long a term is, sometimes there is the odd week when it's not on due to the coaching hall not being available. This has to be paid in advance every term.

My dd has never been to swimming lessons as they always coincide with ballet or gymnastics but I keep saying that I'm going to put her into the crash courses during the October holidays or Easter holidays but by the time I remember they're all full up

On the swimming front I took DS from about 3 months but not in the week after he'd had the polio vacc. I took him to the baby group and he loved it.

zebra · 05/01/2004 21:57

Guess I was wondering what DS might learn in formal swimming classes he couldn't pick up from going with all of us -- it's our family outing, you see. I am desperate to get DS into gymnastics, though, must ring the people again, this thread reminds me.

Hulababy · 05/01/2004 22:05

I took DD swimming from 4 months. She is now 21 months and loves it. I have just put her name down for Aqua babes swimming classes for when she is 2 - starts building water confidence and moves on through 3 classes till they swim properly as they get older.

Zebra - we often go swimming as a family and ds1 (aged 4.5) was very confident in the water but wouldn't take his armbands off.
I took him to swimming lessons last term and within 3-4 lessons he was swimming without his armbands. He got his 5m certificate at the end of the term.
We still go swimming as a family most weekends (also have a 2 yr ds2), but he enjoys his lessons as well.

Slinky · 05/01/2004 22:15

Yep same as my DD2 (now 4). She has always been very confident in the water with us, but only with a swimming jacket.

At our swimming sessions they are encouraged to go in with no aids at all which she did without problems and is now confident enough to jump in off the sides, go underwater etc.

emsiewill · 05/01/2004 22:19

DD1 art class £7 per week
DD1 gymnastics £5 per week (2 sessions)
DD1 swimming £2.50 per week

DD2 ballet £3 per week
DD2 gymnastics £2.50 per week

= £20 per week ~ £240 per term (based on a 12 week term).

This will go up when DD2 is 5, and can have swimming lessons and go to the art class (discount for siblings - £11 per session)

Davrosthesnowman · 05/01/2004 22:42

Swimming lessons definitely contribute something other than we could manage at a family trip. My autistic son has learnt to swim in the last 6 months through sturctured lessons rather than just enjoying splashing and horsing around. I wouldn't take my baby (now 9 mos) to a public pool as I'm worried about what horrid germs, diseases and dirt are floating around, don't think I would do it until she's at least 2 yrs even though I'm sure she'd enjoy it. Maybe this is something I'd change my mind about though.
I won't go into how much we spend on extra curricular activities as its not a fair comparison as we're doing lots of therapies and activities due to my son's autism/special needs (even though many are via charities).

Oakmaiden · 05/01/2004 23:27

I did it! I phone up about the gymnastics class... of course, never get to talk to a real person, do you? Only voicemail... I hate telephone tag.

snowysam · 06/01/2004 10:23

DS1 £56 on Tae Kwon Do (Sp?) - hes tall and uncoordinated so I wanted him to do something that will teach him a bit of control. He goes to a football club and a games club, but they are run by the school and are free.

DS2 will do the same when he starts reception in September.

tallulah · 06/01/2004 18:27

Ballet classes for 4 of us (yes, me as well!) £140- 160 per term. Additional costs for panto costumes & extra lessons about another £400 each year.

zebra · 06/01/2004 18:29

I own a piano... but have no room for it in the house. Almost nil prospect of ever having a house big enough for it, actually. Family heirloom so I can't just sell it. What a Pain.

tamum · 06/01/2004 19:41

The answer for me is....far more than I can bear to add up, sorry (ds- choir, piano, violin, swimming; dd- ballet, swimming). Aargh.
