Giving up dairy

Well, inspired by postings from several people here I have now begun to go non-dairy.

Tried Soya milk again for the first time in 10 years and, although I may be imagining it, it seems to have improved!

Have stocked up on sesame seed products and baked beans to keep Calcium intake healthy!

I have bought some Tofu but also bought regular cheese as this is currently quite a staple for us all - any goos alternative suggestions??

The kids were fine with chocolate soya milk so tonight we will try unflavoured.

Not sure what the next step will be for us on the healthy/green/eco friendly journey. We recycle and compost and I have just ordered our first riverford veg box.

Anyone use Janey Lee Grace's book?

Moral support and suggestions gladly received.

Hope this post doesn't seem too inane and pointless...

Goat cheese isn't dairy. It's more digestible and there are so many varieties available.

I love pulses and beans but you need to make sure you flavour them well. Puy lentils have a nice flavour of their own, as do pinto beans.

Goat milk is also good for cooking and means you can have cheese sauces etc.

I quite like rice milk as it's less chalky than soya. Also hemp milk is incredibly good for you but a bit of a faff.

Good luck. I feel much better when I'm off the dairy. (skin looks better, asthma disappears etc).

Also worth looking at wheatanddairyfree.com for ideas.

Ds aged 9 has been non dairy for about 6 weeks on doc's recommendation. I've been surprised how easy it is these days - I tried a few years ago for my asthma. I did have to laugh at some of the non dairy cookbooks - never thought \i needed dairy for stir fry!

spidermam, it was YOU who really got me into the idea of this!

I bought rice milk today to try as an altenative so we'll see.

OH is less convinced by soya milk idea and grimaced excessively when I insisted he made us both coffee without milk. (Decaf fairtrade!)

I love goats cheese so will try and encourage the chidlren - they are okay with babybel goats cheese so we'll see how they fare with 'proper' goats cheese.

I would love some seasoning ideas for lentils and other pulses. I like soups with pulses added but am unsure of how to flavour a pulse based meal. Have stocked up on wild rice and stuff but now need to buy herbs and spices. I love tarka dahll!

Milk in my coffee was the big problem for me. I now use loctofree - hardly any lactose so doesn;t irritate my ashma but tastes fine - it is cow's milk though (0.05% lactose). I'll never like soya milk - I've tried on and off for 10 years. Goats milk is fine but not in my first coffee of the day.
