Ok, so i finally got my provisional through (yay) and started looking about for a driving school

When did they start only doing 2 hour lessons ffs?! That's 50 quid a go!

I am not happy, i don't think i can stretch to that much every week Angry

Ive had a few, but I pay £16 an hour, which I thought was awful, but 50 for 2 hours Shock

I can only afford one a week aswell, its going to take ages to learn at this rate

lou33 · 02/04/2006 12:53

all the places i have looked up online have said they do 2 hour lessons, apart from bsm , who didn't mention it at all until they were about to take my money, so i told them no ty

i'm ok for the first 10 hours as my sister is paying for them as a lte birthday pressie, but after that i cant spend 50 quid a bloody week!

lou33, have you applied to the family fund to help with lessons? they paid for 37hrs with bsm, 2 goes at theory and 2 goes at test. (already had done my theory and only needed to do one test). without themi wouldnt have been able to pass.

lou33 · 02/04/2006 12:57

no i havent misdee, mainly because i want to get going immediately, and i would have to wait weeks for them to faff about deciding

i've waited since january for my provisonal, and i couldnt apply while it was going through in case they turned me down based on my history of epilepsy.

i just want to get on the road asap now

well apply now, book with anyone, if they agree then switche to bsm. my instructor was great. i did have to pay for the last 5 hours as i had a few weeks between my lessons running out and my test, and wanted to keep going, but even the extra lessons were reduced to £16 or there abouts.

thnaks for the congrats, i passed in sept, its mostly been great tho still not that confindent.

lou33 · 02/04/2006 13:01

they have a big thing about refusing to pay if you have already bought whatever it is you are applying for

OP posts:
misdee · 02/04/2006 13:05

just dont tell them you have already started lessons. just book week by week. they will want photocopy of your liscence. I had already restrted my lessons by then, but couldnt really afford it (was £22 per hour with a different instructor). i said that as my dh was in and out of hospital and was the only driver and my kids have hospital appointments outside of the local area then i needed to learn to drive.

lou33 · 02/04/2006 13:08

good thinking!

OP posts:
misdee · 02/04/2006 13:15

if they do give itr to you, then ask your instructor if you can have four hours a week.

lou33 · 02/04/2006 13:30

yes boss Smile

I want to learn to Lou, have got the form for my proviasional al filled in, just got to send a cheque off with it.

I certainly won't be able to afford 2 hour lessons so I hope I can find one that will do hourly ones.

lou33 · 02/04/2006 13:39

all the ones i looked at seemed to only do 2 hr lessons Sad

i will do some more calling tomorrow

OP posts:
nutcracker · 02/04/2006 13:40

It's a bit crap though isn't it, kinda prices people on low incomes out of the driving thing completely.

lou33 · 02/04/2006 13:46

yeh it is bit shit, but businesses dont care about people on low income, they just want your cash

OP posts:
nutcracker · 02/04/2006 13:46

Very true

Skribble · 02/04/2006 19:57

I went with a independant instructor, £15 a lesson (6 yrs ago), not cheap but very flexible.

I had at least 1 lesson a week but extra lessons when I could if I had the money.

charliecat · 02/04/2006 20:00

Im having an hour a week £21 quid but I pay him in £200 wads and so I get a free lesson, am on dps insurance now but dont want to drive about, nerves/lack of concentration...is that normal?
50 a weeks shocking.

lou33 · 02/04/2006 20:01

i want to learn in an automatic tho as i need to get driving ina s quick a time as possible, and most small schools dont have one

OP posts:
charliecat · 02/04/2006 20:02

do they still do those intensive courses?

charliecat · 02/04/2006 20:04

\link{http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=intensive+automatic+lessons&meta=\any of these near you?}

lou33 · 03/04/2006 12:40

I'll have to go through them and check, i am in sw surrey. Thanks though.

Now, why are people so rude? I had a couple of websites for driving schools locally, one doesnt have an automatic car, fair enough, one is calling me back, but one really dismissive. Their site said they had automatic cars, and they did lessons in my area, so i called them.

Sorry , she said we dont cover your area. When i said to her that it says v clearly on their website that they do, she said , yeh well the automatic doesnt cover your area, and put the phone down on me!

I bet they have a successful business...

Lou, I had 2 hour lessons for years and quite frankly I think it was a waste of my money as I can't concentrate properly that long so I wasn't really getting very much at all out of the last half hour. I now have a teacher that does an hour and a half, which is about right for me.

It is obvious that insisting on two hours is for their convenience, not yours - good luck with trying to find someone who does shorter lessons.

lou33 · 03/04/2006 13:18

Kathy, that is exactly what i thought.

OP posts:
lou33 · 03/04/2006 16:29

well i couldnt find anywhere willing to do less than 2 hours, but a very nice man called Bob called me back, and he is coming to give me my first lesson on weds!

gulp....
