What do you dress a newborn baby in, in the summer?

Baffled by this one.

DD was born in the winter so she wore a body suit and sleepsuit to keep her warm.

But what happens in the summer?
Do they still need that warmth or will they need to be covered up?

a vest
that's about it

Nbg · 28/03/2006 14:11

Excellent. No need to go over board on the clothes buying then!

A bodysuit if it's warm.... however, my DS was a July baby and it was freeeezzzzzing when he was born, I had to rush out and buy him a coat!

LIZS · 28/03/2006 14:16

Go for one layer more than you are wearing , so personally unless it is very hot that would be a sleepsuit or cotton outfit over a vest or a cardigan over a vest.

cupcakes · 28/03/2006 14:17

vests or short sleeved bodysuits.
Ds was June and that summer was rather chilly. By the time I realised this there were no newwborn cardigans to be found anywhere.

WestCountryLass · 28/03/2006 21:04

I used to put DD in romper suits (babygros without feet) and thin tops and trousers.

eidsvold · 29/03/2006 08:37

vest and nappy for most of it - going out - little shorts and t-shirt or dress.

Dottydot · 29/03/2006 13:11

depends where you live - in London ds's existed in vests and nappies for a lot of the summer. In Manchester it's tricky to tell when summer begins/ends, so it's usually t-shirts and trousers - maybe without a vest if it's really hot...

matnanplus · 29/03/2006 13:14

1 more layer than you, in the early days they need to adapt and while we are in the sun wandering around they are in the shade and that can make quite a difference temp wise.

light cotton outfits and vests.

DD2 was born at the beginning of the roasting summer of 2003, so a lot of the time it was just a vest, or nothing at all. Bar a nappy.

mumfor1standfinaltime · 29/03/2006 13:21

Depands how warm it is on the day. Ds was born in January so I was never sure how well to wrap him.
Remember going to mother and baby group in the summer and a woman there had her dd wrapped in a vest, tshirt, cardi, fleece, blanket and tights! It was such a hot day! Someone said something like 'cor your dd looks flushed today, oh and she has a vest on as well under all that!' The woman bit her head off! lol

I used to dress ds in tshirt and shorts and possibly a cardi if a cooler/windy day. I would take a small blanket with me in the pushchair and use it if I needed it.
I think some babies are more 'warm blooded' than others too, and ds seems to 'keep the heat in!'

DS1 was born in July - luckily for him the weather that year was mostly dire but on the odd hot day he wore a v v thin bodysuit and seemed comfortable enough.

jmum6 · 29/03/2006 13:49

My ds (born august 2005) was wearing a short sleaved body vest and babygro when midwife came to visit and she said it was far to hot and to strip him down to his vest. So he spent his first week or two in nothing but vests!

muma3 · 29/03/2006 13:52

i went to see dp mum after she suffered a stroke. dd3 was born 2nd june and we went 112 miles 3 days later . we was stuck on the m1 for 4 hours and i got in the back with the children and stripped her off to her nappy. i was absolutly awful and i was so scared that she would stop breathing or something.

just leave them naked and out the sun imo

muma3 · 29/03/2006 13:53

dottydot, snap! was about to post on how Mancunian babies wear sleepsuits and fleeces year round.

planned all mine to be spring or summer babies for the pleasure of summer maternity leaves. what a waste of effort that was.

JackieNo · 29/03/2006 13:59

My first was born in January, and I well remember the feeling of panic when the first really sunny day arrived, and I realised I knew how to keep her warm (because that's what I'd had to do up till then), but had no idea how to keep her cool.

SoupDragon · 29/03/2006 14:00

Those little shorty all in ones are good. Although not newborn feb/mar birthdays) DSs wore these a lot. Or just a t shirt and nappy.
